ECGS install. Got the vibes driving to anchorage.

New up to anchorage and I have got the vibes unfortunately. I’ve got all the parts and tools from ecgs.. 3rd gen. Anyone have any experience doing it or recommend anywhere to do it?

 

You military? If so the base has a good auto shop you can use. If not, find a buddies garage? My garage is taken with my Land Cruiser and her torn apart t-case for now.

 

Yep, I just haven’t done it yet personally. So not 100% sure how to do it. Don’t know any taco owners up here as of yet. Would hate to muck it up and be out of a Vic while my other is still being shipped. But it needs to get done.

 

Its pretty straight forward. Youll need a big 35mm socket for the axle nut. A set of race drivers are handy to press the new bushing in. Might want to have an extra seal and qt of oil on hand. Loosen the fill plug before starting..

The puller tool can be finicky, if so kiss the edges with a grinder to remove just that little bit of material.

As a side note though, you can still drive for quite a while with a noisy needle bearing from what Ive seen.

Same here. I just orders my ECGS bushing and seal. The vibes started about 150 miles ago. Took the truck out yesterday and the vibes are getting worse. How far can it go without damaging something?

 

How big of a lift do you have, and how long before you noticed the vibes?

 

The Facebook ak tacoma group seems pretty helpful.

 

I have the King 2.5 coilovers so I'm sitting at roughly 3" and I have 10k miles on the truck. Notice it about 150 miles ago. It was ever so slight and more a rhythmic vibration and now it starting to become more prevalent. Having a local off road shop do the install when the bushing and seal get here

They quoted me 3 hours of shop time @ $130 hr. I hear it can be done in 1-2 hours if your experienced and from the videos on YouTube it looks pretty straight forward. I may end up doing it myself if I can find the time. Just wondering if anything can be damaged by driving it. I once blew a bearing in my trailer and it gouged the axle shaft pretty bad.

 

Yea, I've watched a couple good YouTubes on it - very detailed and am getting tips/tools/processes from both lined out as i think I'm going to do it myself as well. I was quoted $345 to put it in...while i get it...it's hard to swallow. I have the part and tools from ECGS. I'd plan on a whole Saturday - take my time, etc. I'm into doing all my own maintenance, but not a mechanic by any means... but this seems manageable. I've heard that once you start really hearing/feeling the vibes, you should get it done as you don't want any of the bearing parts to shred and get into the f. diff. - that's anecdotal and I'd ask someone who really knows to be sure. Ive seen guys go quite a while without any major issues. Biggest thing is a lot of slop in the CV. If you grab the inner CV housing youll actually be able to move it around quite a bit. Dont think Ive ever heard of a needle bearing actually coming apart though.
