Bought a 2020 last Aug and it came with two. I got the hard-sell about buying the 'extended warranty' to replace the FOB in case I lost one. Told they guy I've never ever lost car keys in my life, no thanks.
Bought the wife a new Forester 3 weeks ago. It came with two FOBs and two valet keys.
    I think yer being yanked.

For those who have asked about the purpose of the physical key when there is a hidden one in the FOB. My use case is for the times when i am venturing somewhere i expect i might get wet, (eg. Snowboarding, lake, etc). I will secure my FOB somewhere in the car. And then take the physical key with me so i dont need to worry about ruining a $400 key it if it gets wet.

Since me and you have the exact same truck, question.

If I leave the smart fob INSIDE the car, as you said, would the car lock?

Also if fob is inside, if someone walks by can't they touch the handle, and car will auto unlock?

Thanks. What you describe would be very helpful when we are at the beach, but I want to know how to do it properly

I dont think vehicle will lock when remote is inside. I havent tried it out though. I know you can put remote in power saving mode and it will keep it from transmitting. Its in the owners manual. So I guess in reality if the remote isnt transmitting you should be able to leave it in vehicle and lock it.

My manual only came with one remote key as well and I didn't even get the non-remote key because I bought used and the previous owner didn't turn it in. If you ever want a second remote key without paying the dealer $500, I'll leave my solution below.

Since I have a manual, I dont get the smart key, but this will work for those as well, provided you order the correct fob.

Great questions.... I have done this with several cars no problem. My volvo even had a waterproof "sport fob" you could take with you for this exact scenario. But i digress...

First, locking the car is easy. Even with the fob key in the car just use the physical key (tailgate key as some have called it) and turn to the left and it will lock the doors. When you first close the door it will beep telling you the key is inside but locking it manually will override this.

Second, for the touch unlock to work the key actually has to be outside the car in near proximity to work. Never had it accidentally unlock.

Lastly, how do i store it in the car. So it is true that if someone could get into the car the key would be there and could in theory start the car. So i put the key in a metal box (think altoids tin) and then place that in a bag designed to repel electrostatic signals. (think static bag that a computer part like a graphics card might be shipped in). I will then usually stash behind the rear drivers side seat or in the under floor storage. in theory glovebox would be better because you could lock it with the manual key but it still gives too much of a signal in there. It sounds a little complicated on paper but really isnt. The idea is attenuate the signal and get key far away from the front of car and it wont know it is there.

You just put the FOB to sleep.. turn it off/put it inside the truck/lock the door with the door lock button/close door/use the har key to open/ hit any button on the FOB to wake it up..

put the smart key to sleep. Hold the unlock and press lock 2x, fob will blink 4x to let you know it went to sleep. Press any button to wake it up

This is a FOB / smart key there is no valet key

Minor revision: To put the smart key in battery saving mode, press the unlock button twice while pressing and holding the lock button.

I am very interested in what you said you received. I have a 2021 TRD OR 6MT, so I have no push button start “smart key”. I was given 2 “H” keys which have wireless entry only. I inquired as to a valet key and was told they are not offered or available. I want a valet key, so any feedback you can provide on that issue would be greatly appreciated. The AT Tacoma’s with the smart key system allows for taking out the metal key from the fob, before giving the car to the valet, which allows for no access to the glove box. I would very much appreciate knowing about your “valet”
Key in the MT key system. Thanks.

Is your Tacoma a MT or a AT? I believe this is the point of confusion. The MT does not get a valet key and the AT DOES. I would like to know if my MT can get a valet key, but I do not think it is available to an MT.

I believe you are right, but it only applies to the automatic transmission. The manual transmission has no
Valet key capability. Please correct me if I am wrong.
