If that's the same as the L56 0.025, I've used it and it seems to be fine.

Also -- haven't used it myself - but Tractor Supply carries Hobart 0.024 solid wire in 2# spools.

Hate that no-one can use standardized numbers across the board.. There can't be any noticeable difference in 0.023, 0.024, 0.025... Engineers and Marketing wank

Hey guys. Help a newbie out and critique my workflow/welds please. I’ve probably got about an hour of straight welding time under my belt now. I’m using a Lincoln 140 with .035 wire, FCAW. Metal is 3/16 old rusty angle iron scrap.

For prep, I hit the pieces with the grinder and finished with a 40grit flap disk. Beveled the edges but didn’t leave a gap (should I?) I Used mineral spirits to wipe it down. Ground clamp on the work piece, not the table.

Settings were based on the chart: voltage is “D” and wire speed is “3”, whatever the heck those mean LOL.

I made three passes from right to left (I’m a lefty). The right and left ones one I tried making little “e’s”. The middle one I just drug it in a straight line back and forth.

I think I see undercutting in all of them. Is the voltage too high?

Sure! I'm probably going to scoot it back a bit, I feel like its too close to the cab.
EDIT: Oh and the springs are new. Hopefully it'll settle down a bit.

Bed is about 235 lbs, bumper is 85.

Roughly 15 more than the OEM setup. I'm happy with that.

 

Looks great. And the rear being just a bit high, to me is no issue. Looks like you are going to put a tool box in front (the open space?), and that might bring it down depending on contents.

I see you have stake holders made in the side rails. I know most guys use wood, but you might consider some 1" x 2"(Aluminum if you TIG). I really like the way it looks on mine. They are mainly just for tie downs on mine. I have added loop hooks along the top of each rail, and a small gate across the back since this pic.

If you are going to keep the removable though, you'd have to figure out how to keep them from rattling and being noisy. The wooden ones can get pretty heavy depending on material/size. They also tend to rot inside the stakeholders if you live anywhere that gets much rain. I have them on my 18' trailer and even split in center, they are still heavy.

 

Yep, i can either put more bleacher panels in the front (once i build a center support), or a toolbox. Probably tool box most of the time.

I haven't given a ton of thought to bedsides yet. We had some on a work truck once that were kind of like 3 ft sections that just dropped in and then pinned together, might try something like that. I do have bars welded in between stake pockets for tie downs though, so there's plenty of places to hook.

My Dad once built a rock guard for the front of his trailer out of wood and it rotted out so fast you'd miss it if you blinked It has a steel one now. I might go wood with the bedsides though if I intend them to just be used on occasion (like for hauling brush).

I will say this 2 pound spools are made for Spool Guns

Most people using them in other machines have nothing but feed problems

 

Are they wound looser or tighter? Otherwise I wouldnt see why else it would matter. I've only got a need for a small amount so it's what I'll use and deal with.

 

I could not imagine using a 2 lbs spool of wire in a spool gun. A 1 lbs spool is pretty heavy as it is.

My wrist hurts just thinking about it.
