I was inspecting the underside of the Taco, with the Toytec 3 inch lift and springs in the rear.

The nut and washer are off of the bottom shock absorber and only the bolt is in, held in place by tension of the suspension.

It's 7 pm here and I have no idea how long I have driven it like this, so it may be safe to drive to work tomorrow. Or it may have just happened and I'm living on borrowed time.

But, what size is the nut and washer?

What can I do tonight, all parts stores are closed and the dealer is closed.

Is is safe to drive to work (15 miles of freeway)?

Need help so I can sleep at least.

You will be fine. The suspension will still cycle like it should, but if the shock falls out, you will have no dampening on that side. If it were me, and I am not responsible in anyway for your actions, I would remove the shock, just incase it were to just dangle and get beat up by the springs, to save any damage from occuring to it. Vehicle handleing may be impared a little nit, as I mentioned, no more dampening on that side. Get a new bolt, nut, and washer in the morning. I have some friends that have pullered their shocks off the frame, only to have to drive home (75 miles) and do the repair. If they can drive without a shock, Im sure you can. :)

this happened to me when like a dumb A++ i didnt double check the bolt tightness on the shocks i installed on my last truck. when i saw mine it was hanging there about to fall off completely. what i did is found a large washer and nut that fit (from the garage) and put it back together. not the exact washer that came with the shock but it worked for me.
This is just what i did, not recommending it, im not responsible in any way for your actions.

i don't think it will fall off. try pulling on it a little and i doubt it will move much. I wouldn't worry about it and even if it does come off it won't do much but bounce the heck out of you

Lowe's or HomeDepot is still open. Take the bolt out and head to the loose nut and bolt department.

If you can't make it, inspect the threads on the bolt. If they look pretty clean, chances are the nut just came off, if they look dirty, or have a lot of road grim on the threads, chances are you lost the nut a long time ago and you will definitely be ok.

The last thing I would do is remove the shock and drive on the freeway, that is a definite NO-NO!

Is this the front shock or rear?

If its a front shock/strut, I WOULD NOT drive it without a nut on it.

Its the rear shock. OK i'm relieved that it wont pop off and cause me to swerve off the road.

I did go to Home Depot but think it's a metric. It looks close to a half inch.

they ahve metric at home depot in the drawers......so you should find it......but i would not worry about it. just wait to get the right nut and washer.

if you are concerned....put some weight in ur bed for the ride.......the weight will put some more tension on the shock and that bolt will not budge

I know this is late and the poster has already rectified the situation but......Got some vice grips or Duct Tape? Put the vice grips on the thread side of the bolt so it can't slide out. If you have duct tape you can wrap it over the thread end close to the shock to build up the thread so it can't slide out too. Then do a quick wrap around the shock end to seal the deal.

I was a crew chief on fighters. I had just as many full landings as I had take-offs. ;)

It took a college education to break it but a high school diploma to fix it!!!

hopefully duct tape wasn't used as a fix on too many fighters!! :)

He was looking for a "Band-Aid" fix.....temporary, limp mode, gotta get back to civilization type repair. He wasn't gonna keep it that way.

Ya gotta read the whole thread, not just the last two posts. That's how things get lost in translation.

    (Thank you Chris...)
