They're afraid of Emerald Ash Borers, Gypsy Moths, and Oak Wilt. Unsurprisingly, these were the names of my first three bands. I played lead guitar but we never had a good bassman. :D (I don't actually have any musical aptitude, as instruments don't have IP addresses)

That guard position is old school, if it still occurs. My old man was the on duty guard there back in the 70s (during his twenties)

I'm actually hoping to do so Friday, but still planning a few things out with work.

Yes, emerald ash borers were the main concern then.

I was in numerous bands, some with really stupid names. :D

I think Oak Wilt is when you have too many barrel-aged beers.

Lol! Or like the way I slowly work my way closer to the ground as I drink whiskey. You know; standing, then sitting, then eventually just laying on the ground. :drunk:

It's definitely nice to be in on the communication. Plus, sometimes we pick up conversations of crazy hill people.

Okay lets have a radio discussion:

Radio frequencies are broken down into groups determined by their frequency, and sometimes referred to by their wavelength range. HF: 3-30 MHz (100-10m), VHF: 30-300 MHz (10-1m), UHF: 300 MHz-3GHz (1m-10cm).

Typically, frequencies above 1GHz are called microwave (used in wifi (2.4, 5GHz) and I'd say the useful communication UHF range ends around 480MHz -- the upper ends are used for telemetry, cell freqs, public safety, pagers, etc.

For radio communication, we can use:

CB, which is a HF band (26.965-27.405MHz). Legal CBs are limited in terms of their output power, which means their transmitted range is relatively limited.

GMRS, which is a UHF band (462.5625-467.7250MHz). GMRS requires a license unless you want the FCC to harass you (basically never happens, but still. theres no test, just payment)

ham/Amateur Radio, which has 3 different levels: Tech, General, Extra, which all come with increased transmission privileges (tech starts at >30MHz and a few HF bands). These require payment and a test (and based on my interactions, a motorized scooter for movement)

It all depends on a. what you want to do, b. who you want to talk to, c. what your homies use.

CB is the cheapest and easiest to get into, but typically has poor range and can get busy on channels. GMRS is pretty good, but requires extortion payment to the federal government. Amateur lets you get the most out of your radioing adventures -- HF your way across the ionosphere for a Japan contact, download a picture from the ISS with a coat hanger and PVC pipe in your backyard, APRS your trips across the state so your wife/other radio geeks know where you are, get into SOTA and hike to peaks while also doing radio things -- the possibility are endless!

I think the band Emerald Ash Borers are a Swedish black metal band. They are also treasure hunting grave diggers. They are horrible to listen to unless you are blacked out wasted

Ham requiring a motorized scooter is accurate. I took my test on a computer and I think that was the first time some of those people had seen the magic internet box...they also used ones from like 1998 running Windows XP when I did this 2 years ago.

Most of the elmers are super radio nerds and antenna theory hurts my brain

^ All of this. Especially the motorized scooter requirement. The few hams I have known were also the geekiest of geeks. Not passing judgement just an observation.

When I try to book a campsite at Wyalusing online it states campsites aren't open until May 1st. Has anyone confirmed otherwise?

That means I need to go through all my camping gear I haven't used in years and see what's still good.

No such thing as over packing for camping!

If you have good systems and can set up and tear down pretty quickly, then be comfortable!

I mean for fucks sake our camping fridge makes ice. So I can have margaritas at camp by the fire.

Glamping for life! Live it up.
