Those with Manual Transmission...why?

Same thing with my jeep. I had an '05 Rubicon Wrangler that was an auto. Once you had 35s on it, you could pretty much just put it in 4LO, first and idle over anything. It was kinda boring.

Picked up an '07 Wranger Rubicon with a stick. Even with the change to the 3 liter V6, the stick made it far more fun to drive, especially off road. Rockcrawling in an auto is really just point and shoot, doing it with three pedals and a shifter is far, far more challenging and fun.

 

I'm averaging 17.6 over the first 3k miles in the winter. I expect this to go up noticeably as stations start changing to their summer fuel. Most of my driving is between 35-65 mph, with a lot of hills so the DFCO works in my favor a lot, but accelerating back up those hills takes its toll on fuel economy as well. I also don't hammer the gas from the line and rarely rev past 3000 RPMs unless I'm trying to pass that asshole that drives 35 in a 45 and then accelerates when the lane opens up to four lanes.

 

Test drove the 2020 Sport. Liked it. Virtually new with less that 7k on the clock. Seemed to go in and out of low range easier than the AT's that I'd tried. Gearing seemed pretty nice for flowing with traffic light traffic, without needing to switch. Where I am less traffic in rural Maine, not much off road, lots of sticky mud roads. Price was a good bit lower than I could do a 21, a few k more than 18-19 AT's with more milage. And they will move my trade on which I made money fast.

 

I chose a manual transmission for my 21 Tacoma because my very first vehicle at 16 years old was a 1994 Chevrolet S10 5 speed, that thing was a beauty and solidified my love for manual transmissions. It's sad that manual transmissions are slowly fading away.

 

The other day I tested 1st gear without throttle on a garage exit and no issues... it climbed it and it was a significant incline..

Also on traffic, the truck goes so slow on 1st that it helps not to engage and disengage that often..

 

It's cheaper (though this may be arguable and situational over the long run) and I prefer it. Simple as that.

It may be coincidence but my favourite previous vehicles have all been manuals.

I don't hate on auto, I don't bang on about being "one with the machine" or "real trucks shift themselves" in regards to a manual. I just like what I like.

 

So to summarize the last 30 pages it looks like there is about 4 reasons to have a manual.

 

You can connect with your vehicle just the same or better with an auto but you have to understand how it works.

 

Eh...not really, not even close. Even with actual selectable gears it's not the same and the Tacoma autos don't even have that.

 

You my friend are funny. How about a hundred different reasons "to have a manual". Did you really read every post in this thread ? ? ?

Yeah, 58 vehicles later and I'm going to have to disagree with this. You definitely connect better to a manual.

 

You choose when to change gears.
Less electronics/parts involved.
Keeps you attentive while driving in the city.
It’s fun.
It’s an anti theft device.
Half of you probably can’t even drive one.
Nuff said.

Maybe your problem isn’t physical maybe it’s communication and time apart would help bring you closer overall. Also autos are way more fun to drive on the daily.

Because I got the Tacoma as a “fun truck” to go on adventures and stuff. If I wanted a “work truck”, I’d probably have a full size. Manual transmission makes the fun truck more fun

 

That’s your opinion which is fine. There is nothing wrong with Preferring a manual transmission even though the automatic is a far superior design. To anyone that hasn’t driven a manual I suggest you take an hour out of your weekend to learn how to do it then you can decide for yourself.

 

What makes it far superior in design? Just that it's more complicated?

 

I’m a big manual fan. That being said, I flat out loved the auto in my 2nd gen. It always did exactly what I wanted. The 3rd gen was painful to drive. ETC and s5 mode helped, but then the mileage dropped and hitting a series of buttons every time you drive sucks. The manual is fantastic. If they would have driven like the second gens, I likely would have gotten the auto.
