Towing an RV... it is possible believe it or not!

Hey Sam, That is more than I would go for. I went from a 3,700 lb (dry) trailer to 4,500 lb (dry) trailer and than has made me much more weight conscious. Aim for 4,000 lb if you can, much more enjoyable towing experience.

 

Is this for a E brake controller?

 

It looks like this and it's usually located towards the bottom of the kick panel closer to the floor. At least that's where mine was.

 

Since I'm in the market for a WDH how do you like the BlueOx? Wondering how loud it is? I was looking at the BlueOx SwayPro but their hitch requires I use the 9 hole receiver and running it 1 hole up from the bottom put's me around 3/8 of an inch higher than their recommended ball height but the next step either direction is 1 1/2 inches.

 

We haven’t had any issues with our blueox setup or noise but we have the TrackPro, not the SwayPro. Regardless of the brand you go with, I would highly recommend a solid bar & bracket style WDH versus a chain style. I’m sure chains would introduce more noise but ours at speed is silent and even at slow speed and sharp turns (backing into a camp slot or our storage unit) there is minimal noise if any.
Everyone’s setup will obviously be different based on taco year, trim, mods, and trailer setup but I’m able to only need their 7-hole ball.

Are you mainly towing on flat roads? Not too many long grades? I recently made my first trip from San Diego to the Yuma area via Hwy 8 east. (Imperial Dam) I have a 2021 Jayco 154 BH Baja, dry weight 2,800lbs. I was blown away how poor the gas mileage was. Coming back to San Diego from the Yuma side of the Laguna Mtns. is a steeper grade. Really had to push my 2006 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner Quad Cab 4.0 V-6 a bit hard to make the grade. I am looking to upgrade to a 2021 TACOMA PRE-RUNNER QUAD CAB 2WD with the 3.5 V-6. What is your experience hauling with your Tacoma? Still tough?

 

Our first four trips have all been around Texas so yes, mostly flat highway driving. I can definitely tell that in my 2018 there is a sweet spot for MPG but unfortunately it isn’t where I want it to be. Because Toyota doesn’t recommend using the adaptive cruise control while towing I’m kind of all over the place. Driving 60 I’ll run around 2500RPMs and MPGs are 12-15 but at 65 it jumps to 3500RPMs and I’ll get 9-11. It’s a battle to keep it consistent using your foot and not cruise so I’m averaging around 11 overall. I could see how driving at grade and higher elevations it could be even worse.

I am in the market for a small travel trailer (thinking about the Sunset Park Sun-lite 16bh). The more I read online the more nervous and overwhelmed I became about weights and etc. After reading this post, I feel confident and excited about the prospects of towing a TT that is on the smaller side.

Don’t want to give you a false sense of confidence but with a dry weight of 2,500 I’d say you’re definitely good to go with that trailer. We actually went to a CAT Scale at a Flying J on our last trip to get true weights and our Winnebago with food, gear, and 2 full 20lb propane tanks was right at 4,000 and we’ve had no trouble!

 

EDIT: Just read they discontinued it mid 2020. mine is a 19/2020 so hopefully I have one, will check in the morning... Thanks for mentioning!

It no longer contains an ‘auxiliary transmission cooler’. It only has the one integrated into the radiator.

We took our first trip this month to a TX State Park (Martin Dies Jr.) that wasn’t a full hookup site. Before we left, I added the Roll-N-Lock “QuikRak” to my M-Series cover and 2 Yakima FrontLoader mounts. We also bought a Camco auxiliary tank for easier dumping. Highly recommend all of it for anyone looking for a bike rack solution and the tank was a breeze to use.

Even with all the additional weight of our new gear, CAT verified weights are still well within ratings!

 

We just picked up that same tote tank for our Grand Design 17MKE. Great option!

 

You guys don’t have issues going up hills? I have a vintage canned ham and I’m always downshifting and flooring it just to maintain speed (60-70mph). Then again maybe the part of CA I’m in is just more mountainous. The trailer is only supposed to be about 1500#. Weird. I think I’m going to have it geared lower, otherwise it’s just a pig.

 

Hello all. I’m new to the forum. Just bought my taco in January. New to me 2017 trdor inferno. I’m going to be picking up my new camper(2021 Gulf Stream vintage cruiser 19erd) in a few weeks. I bought an eaz lift WDH and was wondering if I need a sway controller or if the WDH is adequate. Appreciate any input. I should mention the trailer is just over 3000lbs
