    Hey guys,

2 days ago I was playing music through my phone’s Bluetooth and started to hear static. Thought that was odd since it’s a digital signal. Yesterday, I had some more static when playing through Bluetooth, and also from playing audio from the fm radio until it eventually just stopped having any audio. So now no sound comes out of the speakers.

have any of you experienced this?? What did you do to fix it?

    thanks!

No expert here but could it simply be a plug coming loose from the head unit? The static was it loose and then it came out all the way?

Might be worth pulling the head unit out and taking a look.

that’s what I was hoping it was. I took the head unit out and unplugged and replugged all the cables back into it, but still no sound.

yes, the static was loose and then there was no sound.

Full discloser, I bought my '16 TRD Sport LB used in 2017. Previous owner replaced rear door speakers, tweeters, and appeared to have replaced the front door speakers, but reinstalled the front door factory speakers before selling. They also cut the speaker wires, behind the head unit, but had crimped them back. No power or ground wires were cut.

I am having the exact same issue on my '16. This started about 6 months ago, it went completely out for about three days, then came back on. A month later, same thing happen but this time, it has been out since, except for two very brief periods (less than 30 secs), both times it came back, there was static. Though I know this last time it was on the tuner, so that could explain the static.

My PTO was about to run out, so I took this week off. On Monday (3/22), I took out all of the door panels, and pulled the head unit (partially) out. I used a multimeter to test the speaker ohms, continuity, power & grounds, all checked out. I also recrimped all speaker wires, and retested, as well as reseating all connectors on the back of the HU. I tried testing the speaker output, from the head unit, and did not get a reading that I felt was reliable. I have never tested the output on one, so I am unsure if I was doing it correctly, but I tested both, AC & DC...

I decided to take it to the dealership on Tuesday. They had to for 36 hrs before calling me, they said it would be $6,200, which includes installing a complete new wire harness throughout the truck, 2 x tweeters, 2 x 6x9's! If that didn't work, then they would install a new HU. He said it would be better to just take it to BestBuy and let them look at it. This was per the guy who took my info for the truck, I have no idea what his job title is, nor do I care. When I received the work order info, it said $5,200 for head unit, and 1k for speakers, so I'm assuming he told me the wrong thing. Either way, no one is going to pay that much, but I did have to pay $75 for that info!

Next steps (which is how I found this thread), I bought a cheap radio from Wal-Mart (on my way home from the dealershit), and I'm going to see if I can get music to play, which should tell me if the HU is bad. If it is, then I'm not sure what my next steps will be.

Anyone have any suggestions or anything to add?

Well if you do confirm it's just a bad head unit, time for an upgrade! hit up Crutchfield.com and grab something slick with carplay and google car support.

If it's not that, considering the hacking of the factory harness the previous owner did I'd probably tear out all the trim in the cab and look for anywhere that the previous owner might have a mini-amp spliced into the factory wiring and see if you have bad connections where it was spliced back together.

My initial money would be on head unit. If it spent considerable time out of the truck tossed in a box in the garage who knows what might have been knocked loose or developed internal short due to lack of atmosphere control.

I was able to verify that the HU is bad. I briefly spoke with Crutchfield about possible replacements. I'm torn, while Android Auto would be awesome, it appears that I can't use the existing SiriusXM antenna, and would need a magnet antenna to stick on the truck. I'm not a fan of doing that, so I guess I've got to think about it for a bit...

$6,200?! That is nuts! So I take it the Walmart radio worked?
I’m taking my truck in to a small stereo shop today to see if they can figure it out.

AWESOME, I'll check it out, thanks!

Unfortunately, the Walmart radio worked and my HU did not, though it powered up just fine.

So update on this. I went to the stereo place so that they can look at it, and they said all of my wiring was good. The issue was with the head unit itself.
Soooo I’m no longer running the stock entune head unit. I replaced it with an aftermarket one and I’m back in action. I have sound again.
