5k miles and I feel like my JBL radio has already gone to shit. It rattles everywhere when I play a song with heavy bass. Anyone have replacement suggestions? I know I need to get sound deadening too but not too happy with the radio so far

I understand that they rev higher to drive the pump. That wasn’t my point.

Hey guys my 2020 Taco has 12k miles on it and just randomly a couple weeks ago it started to have a rough idle to it on the passenger side but only when I am in drive or reverse when stopped. Once I give it gas the noise goes away. I took it to the dealership twice they said it’s fine nothing is out of the ordinary. It’s also completely stock still. Would anyone know what it could be? Thanks!

Does the truck actually run rough during this time or it simply sounds like it does? I know when my truck switches between injector types it sounds different, never makes it run poorly however. They also are reported to have a “self cleaning mode” to clean the direct injectors, that’s also said to be noisy, but again shouldn’t change how the truck runs.

I think I recall Mat w/ OVTune stating the 2GR-FKS operated at "the ragged edge" of acceptable AFR & timing for various load levels when driving. I've always thought the engine ran rougher than it should, but I just attributed that to motor switching injection modes like you said. This was before I knew about OVT and the efforts Mat made to sort out the 2GR.

Seems strange the motor would run rougher on one side of the cab vs the other, though.

The single side running rough is what has/had me confused as well.

No the truck doesn’t actually run rough just sounds like it and I just can’t figure it out. The RPM’s are normal as well. I’ll do more research into the self cleaning mode. Thanks!

Yea that’s what I don’t get either. I don’t get what on the passenger side would make it sound like it is running rough.

Yep, what happens is the sides of the brake shoes rub against the backing plate of the drum assembly when the brakes are applied.

This video explains the contact grease points at 1:22...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idB7Kh27DHA

The Toyota tech went ahead and lightly sanded my drum pads and turned the rotors as well when they greased the backing plates, but I wouldn't recommend that unless your getting any brake pulsation when applying the brakes. I complained to the service manager about that and he claimed it was part of their standard drum brake service. If I'd known they were going to do that with my low mileage I would have greased the backing plates myself, but it is what it is.

They also didn't adjust the star wheel adjuster out enough so my pedal went to the floor and the truck barely stopped. (brake shoes weren't pushed out far enough to make enough contact with the drum hat)
I ended up taking the truck back and made them re-adjust the drums and parking brake cable, so it was documented for future warranty purposes, but if you just reverse the truck a few times and hit the brakes sometimes everything will tighten back up if it's not too far out of whack.

It's really an easy fix if you know what you're doing and a pretty standard maintenance thing for drums.

Pretty much the exact symptoms only occurred at low speeds/ parking lot driving.
Sometimes aftermarket pads make more noise depending on the materials they're made of or make extra noise if the drums get dirt/ excess brake dust in them.

Thank you!! I’ll have to take it to have it greased up since I don’t have a safe flat spot to do it. The tech told me my front pads were cheap and to change them so there’s that too as you said. Just going to drop OEM back in the front.

I thought mechanical problems were to be expected with Mopar stuff though. Toyota was always known for long lasting vehicles (older ones especially). I do like a lot of Mopar stuff though and Chevy and Ford and...well you get the point.

Stuff can go wrong with any mechanical device, my 2015 Tacoma 4.0 got a new short block at 9k miles, bad rod bearing. That's why we have a warranty.

Having said that, as tempted as I was to move to a Gladiator a few months back....I just can't bring myself to do it.
