Hey guys I'm hoping y'all can help point me in the right direction here regarding some intermittent issue I am having with my taco. This might be a little long but I'll try to keep it short.

Edit: This is a 2008 Pre-runner 4.0 2WD. Has between 150k - 270k miles. True milage unknown and usually it runs like a dream.

Monday last week - Engine light comes on, truck running fine. OBD2 code says misfire on cylinder 3

Next day - I start truck to go to work and it was idling wicked rough and shaking the truck, so I stayed home replaced all 6 spark plugs and the ignition coil on cylinder 3. All OEM parts. After that the truck was running better than it has in a while and I thought it was fixed.

Tuesday this week - I notice a weird feeling like I'm going over small bumps when accelerating from stop lights at about 20 - 40 mph. I thought it was maybe suspension or steering related like or tie-rods, ball joint, etc....

This bumpy feeling continued a few times a day for the whole week, did not seem like a major issue.

Today (Friday) - I'm on the way to my dads' house to use his jack and take a look at all the steering/suspension components. On the way over I gave my truck about half throttle on an open road and it revs to almost 4k and then loses all power and engine light comes on flashing when I try to give it some gas at low speed I feel that bumpy feeling again.

I glide into a parking lot and my truck is idling rough as hell again with slight shaking. I turn off the truck for 5 mins. I start the truck back up and it's 100% fine again. I drive home, testing giving it some good amount of throttle, and let it idle for 10 mins and it's smooth as ever.

Not too sure what's going on here maybe a sensor? Cam position, throttle position, MAF??? I only think this because it was fine after turning off and on. Also my oil level is 100% good and I don't see any leaks or anything like that....

Thanks if you read this whole thing I'd appreciate any insight! I have a diagnostic appointment at Toyota next Saturday but I'm hoping someone here might know what this is.

Flashing CEL is mad mis-fire. Are you still getting codes on cyl 3? Swap the coil on 3 to another cylinder and see if the codes follow. Also, what plugs did you use?

I forget the brand but they were OEM equivalent from the parts store, iridium ones. I put the new coil on three but I’ll swap it in the morning to see if it helps at all. Ty

    2TR-FE should use Denso
1GR-FE should use Denso or NGK.

    Iridium is only for 2TR-FE

I would bet that's your problem.

    Edit:
    1GR-FE:
    -Denso k20hr-u11
    -NGK LFR6c11
    Gap 0.043in / 1.1mm

    2TR-FE:
    -Denso SK20HR-A11
    Gap 0.043in / 1.1mm
You don't set gap on iridium

np, hopefully that sorts you out. I've done the exact same in other cars, ever since I check to see what the manual calls for. Some, don't give too much of a crap, but like a VW VR6 if you don't put NGK coppers in, enjoy the misfire every other stroke.

That’s some good info, I had no idea the type of plug could make a difference like that... What’s messed up is I called the parts store to get a refund on these since they recommended the wrong type and they said that the only plugs that come up for my truck are all iridium and they wouldn’t refund me, I won’t be going back there.

Just an update - I did put the NGKs in and so far it seems normal for now at least. I did some test drives and did some hard accelerations to from 0 to 65 and a little cruising and haven’t noticed any bumping/misfires like before. Hope is stays running strong, I’ll update in a few days if it’s still running strong!

Good to hear, and at least it was an easy fix. Where did you go? That seems like a pretty shit way to treat customers, especially when you're asking them to lookup PN/s. That would annoy me enough to be Karen and ask for a manager. Here's a link to testing the coils. I would test cold and hot. As far as the PNs on plugs go, I just for with whatever the factory manual says, and techstream had those listed,

Worst case if you start missing again, swap a coil around and see if the mis-fire follows. Not sure if you replaced them, but don't use cheapie after markets, keep it OE.
The ceramic bits from a spark plug can really whistle through some glass. I wouldn't advocate that, just some fun comment.
