I have nothing against MT. I'm just saying you can't compare prices unless you compare similar equipment.

Alright then, let's just see what a 4Runner is going for with an MT......

I wouldn’t consider the 3rd gen auto and 5th gen 4Runner similar equipment. One drives nice and one drives like poo lol

Sometimes I wish it were an option. But, automatic is nice at other times.

The 3rd gen auto being the one that drives like poo? I thought they had improved the shifting patterns. :notsure:

I know she looks sporty. But, bouncy without the extra weight and it’s a hassle moving stuff in and out of the truck to off road, and our camping game depends on the camper shell. So it’s going back on soon.

    Ha!

Is it better with the tune because of the extra power? Or, does the tune also reprogram the shifting patterns?

    Both

the lower end power definitely helps but the shift logic is a huge part of it. Long story short, the factory tune has a set of tables and it can direct shift to any gear instead of sequentially up or down like transmissions typically do. It’s a good idea in theory but the issue is sometimes you may end up in 4th. Sometimes third. Sometimes 4th then immediately third. It’s super unpredictable

Ahh. That makes sense. I remember skipping gears in manual vehicles, but I was in control so it wasn't annoying. I could see it being irritating if the vehicle was doing this on it's own and jumping back and forth.

I don't think it's as bad as people made it out to be. Some people's trucks definitely misbehave like crazy. What gets me though, is just how inconsistent the issues seem to be. One guy would have a truck that would buck like a bronco, the next guy's truck would drive like butter.

Both of the 2.7 l autos I had shifted just fine, and I've had two friends whose fathers bought 3.5 l autos and they were fine with those as well, one was a double cab short bed and one was a trail limo. But other people have complained endlessly about them so who knows

Oh there will be some mods all right
My own personal belief is this: There re no major differences between Tacomas, but rather we are enthusiasts, and as such we notice more about our vehicles, and expect more from our vehicles. For many people a Tacoma is an appilance like a dishwasher. As long as it moves when they press the skinny pedal and stops when they push the bigger petal they are content. Plus, it depends on what you drove before. If you came from a 4cyl economy car the Tacoma will feel peppy. And for the shifting, many people just set the cruise, turn the radio on, and let the vehicle do what it wants (aka an appliance). It makes sense for a Forum to have lots of complaints because our vehicles mean much more than just an appliance. That's my take on that :D

I think a lot of it depends on the kind of driving you do. If most of your driving is <60 it’s not that bad. If you spend a lot of time at 65+ thats when the shifting becomes noticeable and annoying.

The 4runner is similar. Setting the cruise above 70 MPH, it will downshift a lot, especially in hills or a headwind. But, at 60-70 it's a lot better, even with bigger tires. I can only imagine it being worse with more gears.

If I had an automatic Taco, I could see myself using S5 and even S4 a lot. I even use S4 on the highway in the 4runner when I'm in hilly areas and want to set the cruise.

I might need one of the smart people around here to teach me how to get the T.W.A.T route in my GAIA app, or ONXoff-road. It automatically wants to load into Google Maps, which would be fine except that as soon as I hit a dead spot, Google loses the route and can't reload it. :annoyed:
