Currently shopping for a new Tacoma. It'll be my first and I am looking to purchase one and have it run for a long time. I'm shopping for a 2nd gen, 4wd, I'm thinking I want the v6 motor but only for reliability, I do not have a need to be pulling anything.

I was wondering if anyone had any input on what to look out for? Years to avoid? Best motor for reliability? Things to check when looking at a used truck? Price point is putting me looking at trucks with 100k on them, from what I hear this is nothing compared to how far they will run, but being my first it still makes me nervous to drop so much money on a vehicle with 100k.

    Thanks in advance!!

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I’d head over to a Nissan dealer and look at a new KC 2wd Fronty (but that’s just me). Good luck in your hunt!

Welcome to TW! What’s your budget? I would look for a 12-15 model and always check the frame for rust.

I was just watching some videos on the frame rust issue, living in Northern MN this is definitely something to watch out for. I was hoping to stay around 20k. Just found a 2015 v6 4wd with 119,000 on it. They're asking 25 (which according to KBB is in the proper range for the double cab) Haven't gone to see it yet, hopefully today :)

That is too much for a 2015 with a 119,000 miles. Maybe 20 or 21 for it and it has to be in super shape. I just traded in my 17 OR fully loaded with 104,000 miles and got 24,600 for it. I do realize you get more for it in a private sale.

thank you for the heads up. It was a little too rusty on the back and smelled really bad like smoke. Ultimately passed when they wouldn’t come down in price. Found another access cab I’m going to look at tonight! 2012 with 80k miles

I have! Been searching around a bit, currently in a VW lease and trying to get out of it. Buying it outright is full of fees but most VW dealerships will take it on trade. So I’ve been searching those dealers for the deal, really narrows my spectrum of Tacoma’s to choose from

    UPDATE:

I picked up the truck last night :)

2012 Access Cab v6 its the 6-speed manual, very clean, minimal rusting (really good for where I live in northern MN) 96k miles on it, runs like a champ!! Came with a topper, roof rack, and a few other goodies! IMG_0992.jpg
