Come again. So for you it’s more of a hustle tuning 2.0, than tuning your truck yourself? Help me understand.

So how does a customer feel about flashing something you've created? This is all faith based sharing. Unless Mat made it, there's no guarantee. Even he has disclaimers galore.

This sh*t got real dark, real fast...

You literally stated that you tried things I claimed worked, on your truck, prior to flashing it to someone else. That's good on you, but you first trusted what I did wouldn't blow your truck up. This whole community functions on trusting what someone said or did was actually an improvement and in fact didn't fry their own vehicle.

    You're absolutely correct.

Maybe this is a byproduct of my career in the medical field and the idea of informed consent, but I go out of my way to thoroughly explain everything I'm doing to a customer. This includes fully detailing that, for example, the TSB ECU update utilizes the same program that toyota uses, but there IS the risk of ecu bricking because it doesn't have ecu protections like OV software. I continue by explaining I've never personally had it happen to me, it's reported to be usually due to off-brand cables, but the potential exists. I've had two people turn down the update after being duly informed. Then after it's done, I show them the readout in TIS to ensure they understand that they're seeing from the program that they've been updated and not just lied to. I take a lot of steps to try and build as much trust and understanding as possible.

For the edited maps, I explain what sorts of things I've changed. Not in too much detail because I don't want to overwhelm them, but I go over the basics to help them understand. Now that being said, I discovered very quickly that most people don't actually want edited maps. Most people don't give a shit about what you've done and created. They're there because they want the tried and true OVTune, not "OVTune with edits that makes it not OVTune". They've heard and read so much about OVTune that that's what they want, and it's been very rare for customers to want more.

So yes, you're correct, it's faith based tuning. And it took a little time to build a name for ourselves out here. The first few customers had to take that leap of faith that we were giving them actual OVTune and not just flashing [suspected] the stock tunes like that guy out near Dallas may have been doing. But that's the nature of the beast because even if you only flash OVTune maps with no edits, it's still just faith based tuning regardless.

I'm sure some f*cktard will try doing something dumb at some point, which is all the more reason not to share locked files. I get it.

True. What do you want to do about it?

Fuck it. Work with Mat to implement some sort of way where there's no more money made off of community collaboration. Only OVTune verified maps can be flashed, or maps that someone creates from scratch. I don't care. 99.9% of my tuning income comes from OVTune maps, unedited, because people don't want OVTune-with-edits. It won't affect me.

    Dude, I get it.
This is why I personally won't even flash a locked file. I don't know what you put into that shit. Lol hell, I even use a waiver when flashing, that puts acceptance of responsibility on the customer.

VF Tuner is not getting involved in any of this.

    1. if you post your map data publicly on the forum expect it will be copied and used.
    2. Post your file, unlocked, publicly on a forum, expect someone to take it and even resell it as theirs.
    3. Know who you're buying from and what you're purchasing.

Like any car community there are many great people, and a very small amount of bad people that ruin it for everyone. One of the most common things that happen with any aftermarket performance product is someone taking someone elses idea and trying to sell it cheaper.

Now that we've gone through this B.S.
What does an Unlocked Mooseditty17 tune do for the community? Will people open the files, ask about changes and things go back to how they were? This got super dumb super fast!
