@Sprig If you've been accustomed to St George for some years, tell us how it compares today in terms of "wide open spaces"? :D And about breaking down on the road, I'd much rather break down out there than on a highly traveled road. People are not likely to stop for a stranger on a main highway as they are on a lonely road, and the ones who do stop are more likely to be the type of citizen you'd want to stop. Ask me how I know!

Our first trip to the St. George area was 5 years ago. It’s definitely grown, more people , more houses, more traffic. In fact it’s one of the hottest housing areas in the US. I still like St. George a lot, I think the area would be a great place to live. Our friends live in Dammeron Valley about 20 miles outside St. George. That area is beautiful, and quite rural, about 4500’ elevation. You can go a couple miles outside St. George and you are in he boonies.
As far a breaking down on the deserted lonely highway you do not know who or what may stop. I am always armed on trips like that. There are some real whackos out there. If I break down in a city or well traveled highway police and emergency services are only minutes away with a phone call (and I am armed then too).

There really is nothing political at all about Covid or masks or so damn many things... unless someone thinks they are political. Facts are facts... and my doctor died of Covid, my son and nephew have had it and my 18 yr old nephew is still without his sense of smell, and other people I know have died. And I live in an area that has a lot of people ignoring reality and taking their chances... jeopardizing others.

Good morning all!! Rain here today so the field mower will stay in the barn.

Kurt - you are DIY God and I wish I had 30% of your talent. I truly enjoy seeing your projects.

Ken - I've made a few cross-country trips while moving from East to West coast on Army moves and the stretches of road across Nevada and Utah were breathtaking. I always enjoyed the signs warning against picking up hitchhikers...you never know who managed to escape from one of the prisons.

Rob - are you headed home today? Stay safe in all that white stuff!!

Yuengling is actually the oldest brewery in America. Their home production facility is about an hour away and they currently have one other in Tampa. So, it's only available in 22 states here on the east coast. Last year they entered into a joint venture with Coors and will begin producing Yuengling at a plant in Fort Worth, TX as they begin an expansion into other States. It might get easier to find some before long!

We (Jake young AD E-6 & I) came out noon Saturday. I'm back on shift now. Going back Tuesday with Danny, we took a couple days leave this next week. Maximize tree harvest while we still have clean snow to drag them through.

Your type of entrepreneurship is what makes out country great. I can bet you might already have a buyer for the snow blower. I have a friend that purchases Buick Regals and fixes them up to sell. He does not spend more than $500 on a Regal and he has a waiting list.

I do not get it either. Life is full of choices choose wisely.

I received an outside electrical box yesterday from HD. Ordered it on line at the door 2 days later, It has two GFI outlets in the box. I looked up if I could use the same common and neutral wires on both outlets. It turns Out that I can. I have 5 spare hot wires in an electrical junction box by my outdoor grill set up. Going to wire each one as a separate circuit in the main panel located in the garage. We all know you can never have too much power in the pack yard. The box is made by Midwest Electrical Products. It is the best box I have found for an outside electrical power outlet. Made of metal and water does not get inside them. Cost a little more but worth the cost.

    Good morning all,

Alice is off to work, the Lumber Company she works for is changing their software from DOS (yes DOS) to a newer system. Problem is the new system is NOT designed for a lumber yard and inventory, it is a sales system and the other yards that have been changed over are all having issues with the new system as they are having to create work arounds to get the software to be somewhat compatible to their business model - Alice wants to go back to teaching once that is all straightened out. Don't blame her in some respects.

Going to be a warm day, will take the dogs for a few walks seeing it is supposed to get into the high 40's. Never made it past 39 yesterday but the sun was out and melted a lot of the snow. High winds tomorrow so I need to get a few trees cut down and dragged today.

Have a great Sunday everyone - stay safe

    The Loneliest Highway.

My great grandfathers fought in the civil war. Yes, my Grandparents were born in the 1870s and 1880s. Our generations spread out quite a bit. My uncle got involved in some of the earliest Civil Shooting events, later replacements. So his Grandfathers .59 musket rifle and several musket pistols at the event up in the Battle Born State of Nevada.

Returning home after a long weekend, late at night, he realized a car was trailing behind him. It was not uncommon for a tired motorist to hang back and follow, but when he slowed down the car behind, he didn't pass but also slowed—Thankfully, ahead was a service station, so good time to pull off and fill the tank.

The mystery car had stopped well back of the service station, just off the side of the ride. He understood the danger but decided with his old Ford V8 and a tank full of gas; he could outrun them. He had moved a couple of small boxes from the trunk to the front seat. Car following was just as fast, and he couldn't outrun them.

As he got back on the road, he instructed his wife to retrieve a pistol, fill, ram, and drop in a .50 caliber* lead round.

Ten minutes after leaving the service station, the car behind came alongside to force them off the road. Window down, left arm holding the steering wheel, right hand on the piston, and let loose with that black powder pistol. It produces one hell of a noise and an 8-foot flame.

The offending vehicle did a sharp left across the desert.

He was a California Highway Patrolman, who carried a revolver, but the powder firing musket made a much better visual deterrent. As a kid, for my 13th birthday, I got to fire the big rifle. I was a big kid, 6' 180 pounds in middle school, so I got to fire it. Lean forward, butt against tight against your chest. My uncle would stand behind you, but as that mule of a rifle kicked up, he was there to catch the rifle and let you fall on your butt! My eyes were burning, ears ringing, I'm on my butt, and he is laughing "you did good, pilgrim." The .59 would shatter a plank of wood as the target. Not the most accurate weapon but deadly when on target. My arm still hurts thinking about this.

*I remember the rifle being a .59 caliber, but not 100% sure on that musket. Two different balls (you would scoop and press a hand tool from soft lead to make the balls). The pistol could break a wrist if not held correctly, hence we got to fire the rifle. With boxing, I understand the straight hand/arm and spring the elbow and arm to absorb a heavy blow.

Mad props to that security guard for keeping ̶h̶i̶s̶ her cool and standing ̶h̶i̶s̶ her ground.

We fixed some more of the yard damage from the tree work we had done a few weeks back. We live at the edge of an ash tree grove and the emerald ash borer is killing them all, so we had 5 trees taken down before they came down on their own. Tired me out pretty good, but I took a lunch break, felt a little better, and decided to see if the chain saw still worked. We have a pretty big pile of ash tree trunks out behind the garage that need to be converted to firewood. The saw does still work! But I didn't last too long. There's a lot of cutting to do, plus the trunks are piled on top of one another so there is the additional fun of puzzling out how to cut them up without being crushed under a few tons of rolling timber!

We also found a dead deer back there. Not sure what killed her, she had a belly full of corn so it wasn't hunger. Might have been hit by a car I guess. She'd been there quite a while so 'processing' was well under way. We pulled the carcass into a wheelbarrow and relocated her to a more appropriate location, i.e. not in our yard and not upwind of us or our neighbors. My wife informed me this morning that she dreamt about it. Ugh.

To be fare the guard was a younger woman (younger than me). She did an exceptional job of maintaining her cool and not getting sucked into the banter. I was also impressed with the people in line (men and women) that made it apparent that they were not going to allow him to continue his rant with her and make it personal in gender. No words were said but there was a lot of eyes not smiling under masks in his direction.

:pccoffee: Morning Porch! Seems like the rain that we were to get last night is here this morning! Not much, but enough to make that grass wet and heavy, so looks like I will take the day off from that project! Seems I'm sore again, so I'm not back into summer shape yet! It's OK, I notice they never move anyway - it'll be there.

    Thanks for the compliment Mark!
