Sell Tacoma buy a 4Runner

I'm considering selling my truck to Carvana (they offered me what I paid 2 years ago) and searching for a 4Runner Pro. I actually stopped by the dealership yesterday to check out a Trail Edition. First impression is that the 4Runner is much more refined and comfortable. The only thing that's holding me back is the lack of a manual transmission. Otherwise, I would have made the switch already.

 

I answered you, but I have some questions.

There is no difference in getting in and out of a truck vs a 4runner, so if your wife has trouble with one, she will have trouble with the other.
If she has trouble getting out of the Taco, then maybe a highlander or sienna is for you? They both come in awd.

 

Why does wife hate the Taco? Since the 4runner is basically a bedless Taco will she not hate the 4runner as well?

 

That’s the exact reason I have a Tacoma and not a 4Runner.

 

Ditto. Well, that and I’d feel less guilty throwing a deer in the back of a taco than in the back of a 4R.

 

so you guys are buying trucks for the manual trans not the reason why trucks exist in the first place, the bed.

 

Don’t get me wrong, I love the truck, but if the 4Runner had come in stick I don’t think I would have even looked at the Tacoma.

Hopefully the wife ends up in a 4Runner or Sequoia...

 

I use the bed all the time but I got by in the past with a bunch of Subarus. Now that I’ve had the bed I think I’d have a hard time walking away from it. But at the time I was buying the truck I didn’t think I needed it so I don’t think I would have looked at the Tacoma vs a 6MT 4Runner

 

Gotcha. Myself, almost always having had a truck around, I find it almost indispensable and can't not have one. I just went without one for a year or so and it was a pita to do just regular house stuff without it. This Taco is a keeper. No matter what I buy next, it stays.

 

Currently own both. Used to have an sr5 4runner that was traded for our trd 4runner that rides much better and has a few more extras.

4runner Pros over the tacoma: No quirky trans issues, definitely feels more solid/safer going down the road.
4runner Con over the tacoma: The amount of gas it sucks up, but I can live with that.

I may sell off the tacoma in the future, but having a truck is super helpful at times.

Did the opposite. Sold 2019 a TRD ORP T4R and bought a 2021 Tacoma. Best decision ever.

 

My last two vehicles were an '03 V8 4r and a '99 v6 4R MT. I had the option of buying my dad's '01 Tacoma, but it had 322k miles on it, some bed and bumper rust, and my 4R had around 280k miles on it, and the transfer case had just gotten stuck in 4hi and I lost OD. Rather than spending a bunch of money on both vehicles, and still not having an MT, I decided to let my dad keep his Taco and traded the 4R in for the Taco. If 4Rs came in MTs still, I probably would have bought my dad's Taco for low mileage truck stuff and bought another 4R.

That said, I have no regrets, and definitely like having the bed available for the few times I've benefited from it in the short 4 months I've owned it so far. I suspect I would find a lot more uses for the bed if not for the whole COVID thing, as well.

Two things I would have done different on my tacoma purchase (factory led headlights if they were available at the time and the manual trans knowing what I know now about the funky auto transmissions on the Tacoma's.) It's still a great truck overall though.

Honestly, the honeydos keep me and my truck busy. Mulch, mulch, did I mention mulch. How about trees and bushes. Seems like we always have a use for the truck many times a year. Wood flooring. etc.

Oh man, I had that same truck for 13 years. Best vehicle I have owned.

 

Like most automatics nowadays you can either put it in drive, or you can move the selector to the left (on most, but some cars maybe different) and run it through each individual gear, 1-5. Forget what Toyota call it, but it’s literally on almost every automatic for the last 10 years so I didn’t think to explain it, sorry.

Both the T4R and the Taco had it. I had to use it on the T4R all the time because of the way it’s geared (low). On the Taco, especially with ECT on, I never used it...had no need to.
