This is going over my head. Please explain it as I want to know what I'm so obviously missing. Overlooking the obvious is one of my weak points I'm afraid to admit. It's the 4D chess I'm always playing in my head.

Installed my first water heater install yesterday at my store. Went from a 88 gallon, was a Asian massage parlor before getting busted by DPD, to a 32 gallon. Emptying the old one, over 17 years old at the very least, proved to be the most difficult part of the install. Eventually got the sediment unblocked and completely drained. The new one went in easy enough and heated water quickly. But whoever installed the 88 gallon heater used a saddle mount for the expansion tank. And of course it's now leaking ever so slightly. Think I'm gonna do the Shark Bite fix. How critical is that expansion tank?

 

Yes, I still need to install the overflow pipe.

 

Why didn't they build it big enough to turn around in?

 

Saddle taps are evil. I don't like sharkbite either but that's just because I can solder and do it "properly" Lots of people swear by them and I guess they've been around long enough now that if they were a huge problem, we'd know about it.
Expansion tank is a waste of time IMO. They're code some places, but if you can get away without it, I see no need. The heater has a T&P valve on it after all....
