Not really, Toyota just reconfigured the traditional P-R-N-D-3-2-1 because it's a 6 speed transmission with 2 overdrive gears, and cycling down like that is a little more cumbersome if you want to for instance tow a trailer. So you can see below, rather than going through each gear, it goes P-R-N-D-S, and when you pop it over to S, I think by default it will put it into S4, which is like putting it in 4 in an automatic - it just locks out 5th and 6th gears, but if you come to a stop, it's not going to start you out in 4th gear like if you had a manual. However, you can shift up and down and lock it into 1st gear, or allow it to shift all the way up to 6th if you wish (and so it would perform exactly like it would if you had left it in drive).

As for ECT, it's an option on autos - Electronically Controlled Transmission Power, which just means that by pushing a button, the transmission will delay shift points and let you rev a little higher and get a little further into the powerband before shifting. We don't need this because we have human controlled transmissions.

Definitely try to learn again. I did the same in high school. Tried to learn but was frustrated. Learning a manual and being a new driver in high school can be a challenge. You're basically learning two things at once.

I learned again in my 20s. Took about an hour to get it down. Seemed a million times easier than when I was a kid.

I've had all kinds of MT vehicles, Best 4wd yet is my Frontier Pro-4x. The 4.0L pulls hard to redline and never feels lugged down. The dual mass fly wheel smooths everything out. Throttle response is very good.

I definitely enjoy driving an MT truck or 4wd just as much as any sports car. I live in a mountainous region and have yet to drive an automatic that performs well here. A direct drive EV is as good as it gets.

I was in the same boat, test drove a manual, bought it and never looked back. Only drove autos my whole life and drove a stick like twice for like 2 minutes lol

I have a pontoon boat. I also have an enclosed trailer. I have an 18 TRD Sport AT and a 19 TRD OR MT. The MT has 4.3 gears versus the 3.9 in the AT. I don't have to deal with the crappy shift points any more and the gearing is lower.

Uhhgggg. Manual transmissions are simple, old, boring tech. Just look at how much fun this Lexus GS450H can be! Just nice schmooooooth pulls, without bouncing revs, or a wildly swinging tachometer needle.

In my almost 6 decades on earth I have never dated a girl who couldn’t drive a stick like a pro. (*counts*—well it’s in the double digits...)

There’s probably a naughty joke in there somewhere. Or a David Allen Coe song.

The downside is they sometimes want to drive my car or truck. My ex even got my beloved Subaru Outback with MT after the divorce. Bummer.

First of all, it's important to distinguish between CVT and conventional automatic transmissions. CVTs are to manuals what direct drive e-cars are to automatics.

That out of the way, I'm a fan of CVTs in theory, but the availability of well executed, reliable CVTs are extremely rare. I also hate that a lot of auto manufacturers design in fake shift points so that they feel like conventional automatics, thus negating one of the best benefits in the first place.
I've had to teach a few myself, but watching them learn and seeing their face light up when they really get the hang of things really is satisfying..

Wait, are we still talking about transmissions?

Best vehicle I had to teach my kids to drive stick... FJ60 Land Cruiser. Heavy flywheel, low rpm gear. Near impossible to stall out. Let our the clutch, give it gas, and it went.

Worst vehicle to teach kids manual. My 1999 Nissan Maxima with 5 speed. Much more crisp response than automatics. Challenge was a high rpm motor and a super light (by comparison) flywheel. You had to match letting out the clutch with the rpm near perfectly. I taught my nephew and had a sloped driveway to the house. Tripple challenge. He stalled a few times; I finally told him more gas, and he did aburn out in reverse up and out the driveway, across the street onto the neighbor's lawn. Oops. We switched to the Land Cruiser.

Most humourous was an RX2 Rally Car. Peripheral ported rotary motor, light flywheel, and a "four spot" clutch disc with a heavy pressure plate. That clutch was either on or off, no feathering. Let cars get a good 20 feet in front of you, rev to at least 6,000 rpm, and launch. Desert racing, fine, High-Speed Rally fine. If you went off-road, keep your foot buried and keep the momentum up!

It was about $1000 cheaper and I missed driving a stick the whole time I owned my 4Runner. Also experienced some of the AT quirks while test driving used Tacomas. Finally, I figured this might be my last chance to own a manual as my next vehicle will probably be an EV.

    No regrets.

Fun is subjective. Boring is subjective. My opinion is the complete opposite of yours.

Not to say yours isn't valid (it definitely is) just that some prefer the old or different technology.

A YouTube video of a tach shows me nothing.

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
I will be operating in remote environments and the ability to maintain my own transmission with the greatest ease possible takes precedence. The procedure to merely check the auto tranny fill level at home is tedious. With the manual, I can just drain and refill with Amsoil every 25k miles for peace of mind. I also don't like how the auto transmission is programmed at highway speeds after test driving. I also believe the rear differential for the manual transmission is a little bigger, which may aid in long term durability.

I wanted a manual. I also have a mustang thats a manual so I wanted an auto because after a 16 hour shift at work its nice to just put it in drive and go.

I've had MT Taco's for about twenty years and never thought about using Clutch Start Cancel for this. I take it you turn the engine off, put it in gear, then hit the starter. Which gear and do you have 4wd

That is the weirdest response given that electric is all the rage right now.

Automatics on the other hand are just boring and still being used because some guys can't seem to teach there wife and kids to drive manual, so they justify the automatic in their truck.

Oh, and cavemen never took the easy way, as they were real men.
