A grinder works just fine. As someone who has done a ton of these and has every tool imaginable I use a chop saw to cut it and then drill the rest out on the lathe with a 1” drill bit. The entire process takes me 5 minutes per side.

By no means am I trying to be a know it all I’m just sharing my experiences and what works best/fastest for me

Yah appreciate that. Sounds like a way I would do it. So I’ve you drill it out it’s easy to remove. I miss having a drill press

If you drill the axle to 1” the internal c clip falls out and it comes apart. I’ve never done it on a drill press but it definitely could be done if the axle is clamped correctly. I have a lathe which makes quick work of it

I just did another set this weekend. I use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Takes about 45seconds to cut them off. I’m usually about 3/8”-1/2” above the star, but still low enough to rotate the star and remove. The first set had to be lathed out to remove the clip, this set I used a very lite touch of heat and smacked it with a brass hammer. Got them to separate nicely.

Yeah I just clamp the end In the vise with soft jaws and rotate it around cutting it and angling it down so I don’t knick the housing and get as close to the star as possible

At this point it's comical. I'm just glad there are an abundance of free axles around here since we have a pretty strong Toyota community.

You aint lyin. I was going to give it some good whacks first and then carefully cut it apart and take it to the local machine shop if it didn't work, but noooo. This only took like 7-8 hits to break the cage.
