This one with a little history; full disclosure, I'm not researching any of this, just going off what's between my ears and in my gut. I entered the Air Force in Nov 1983, then reported to my 1st duty station in June 1984, assigned to the Major Command (MAJCOM) "Military Airlift Command," or MAC. The roots of this structure go back to the Berlin Airlift and US Army Air Force (USAAF). After the Air Force became independent in 1947, the airlift piece was named "Military Air Transport Service" or MATS. Sometime in the mid 60s it became MAC. When the Air Force was reorganized in 1992 MAC became "Air Mobility Command" or AMC. The air combat roles were organized under "Air Combat Command" or ACC.
Now to the pic of the MAC shield. Circa 2002 shortly after my arrival to Alaska and Elmendorf AFB, I walk into our squadron 1st Sgt's office and see the shield leaning against his wall. The following conversation occurs-

Me: Where did that come from?

Shirt: ALS (Airman Leadership School - on base) found it cleaning out a closet.

Me: Cool, are we putting it up in the Heritage Room? (Break/multi- purpose room with pics/trophies and such)

Shirt: No, "they" (kool-aid sipping zeroes - no offense) don't want to detract from our new identity as AMC.

Me: :censored: WTF? What are you gonna do with it?

Shirt: Get rid of it "they" told me.

Me: I'll take care of that for you.

It's been hanging up high kinda outta sight in my garage for 18+ years. Danny and I are gonna find a place of prominence on the mountain property befitting of it's importance in history and to us personally.

    Now about them rascally rabbits...

circa 1997ish at RAF Mildehall, UK.
AMC has a C2 comm project to install UHF text datastream system between C2 nodes and aircraft in flight. Basically bouncing text messages off the ionosphere. System gets installed into my ops ctr. During the install the antennae leads out on the airfield got chewed up repeatedly by rabbits, causing significant delays to our node coming on line. The engineers took several attempts before finding the right configuration and materials to stop them. The four star at AMC was reported to have asked at one point, "just exactly how big are these English rabbits?"

Somebody earned their pay in renaming MAC, like they do with everything else.

Have our duties and assignments changed? No. Then what is the point?

Like 604th ASOCS (Air Support Operations Center Squadron) used to be 604th Direct Air Support, and then later got redesignated Air Support Operations Squadron (ASOS). I guess ASOCS was too long of an acronym for people to write.
