I've had a manual T4R and my current Tacoma and there's only been one situation in which it would have made sense to use it (and I forgot about it :frusty:).

It really depends on the situation. Stuck in snow/ice/mud? Stick it in 4LO. Steep gravel road? Stick in in 4HI. Parallel parked on a steep city street with a Ferrari snugged up to your tailgate? Leave it in 2WD.

Edit: Here's a whole thread on it. I think I probably can join most of the comments in that thread in only really using it to start the truck in neutral without climbing into the truck. Funny enough, I can do this in my Supra, whether by accident or design. I'll have to try to start it in gear and see if it'll let me.

    Why not?

Controlling torque to the wheels with the clutch and starting in a taller gear is actually a benefit to driving manual on ice.

Thanks, I checked out the thread. I've only ever used it for out of cab starts in winter. I'll try it. Might be helpful on slippery boat ramps like we have in big tide land, but I will still use a wheel block on a rope, aka clutch saver and 4 wd to climb.

Something cool I found this weekend is that the cruise control doesn't disengage when you clutch in and shift. I've never had a manual do that before but with this engine it's a definite bonus to be able to drop to 5th on a slope and not have to reengage cruise control.

It may be old tech, but it is also the most reliable....

The first time I drove a car with a CVT (a rented Ford Five-Hundred in '07ish) I really thought something was broken in the transmission. Ten years later I drove another car with a CVT (a rented Jeep Patriot) and I had the same opinion. I've heard that Subaru does a good CVT but I'm not sure I'd ever want one.

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
My ex-girlfriend had a Renault Sentra with about 60k miles on it that had some sluggish transmission handling. I did several carefully measured drain and fills with Amsoil CVT and the transmission was a little smoother and whined/raced less when throttle was applied under load. It appeared just over half a quart low and the first drain of the fluid was rather dark. I don't buy the lifetime or 100k fluid these manufacturers list for CVT. IMO its better to perform a drain and fill every 30k miles and you will probably be set for life. Even better, buy something with a manual transmission and ensure it lasts as long as possible.

First CVT I ever drove was my mom's 1991 Subaru Justy 4wd. Not bad in that application considering it had a 54hp 1.0L 3 cylinder and weighed 1800lbs, it drove and even sounded like a current day UTV/SXS.

Wife's 08 Impreza is getting to that age where weird things start to break. Sort of funny that we're coming from a crude 4spd auto and still trying to avoid a CVT. It bothers me that a 2021 Impreza makes less power than the one we already have.

It was just a joke man I have 2 manuals. Always have had manuals hopefully always will. Sometimes you should skim through the thread so you are caught up instead of commenting on the first thing you see.

Yeah Subaru does CVT so well they had to up transmission warranties to 10 years/100,000 miles to head off law suits. We received a letter that made it sound like they were doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

This thread is pissing me off. I honestly never even thought about getting a manual trans in these trucks even though, I had one in my 92-93 toyota truck. Manual trans is my favorite and my sports car is manual and I won't sell it because I love driving it as rarely as I do.

I honestly, truly want a good CVT to exist. I guess we're skipping that concept and going straight to electric cars at this point, though.
