Can they put a booster pump in the house allowing you to keep the well at lower pressure but a booster for the house so when you open the taps, you get higher pressure? Volume may end up being an issue though...

The well pump itself is already in the house since it's a jet pump.

I don't really notice a pressure issue in the house. 30/50 vs 40/60 isn't all that different as far as I can tell. I'm just worried that as this pump wears it won't even be able to do 30/50.

It isn't as simple as GPM/GPH.
The curve is what is important.
Pumps are treated like black magic by many.
And usually just replaced "like for like"... but... as you can see......

Oh, I thought it was a pump at the bottom of the well. Chasespeed has a very good point. Not all 1/2 hp pumps are created equal.

The old one was a cheap brand, can't remember what, but my plumber friend said it was a homeowner special from a hardware store. New one is a Goulds, so I thought if anything it would be better. Apparently I'm finding out that isn't the case!

That's actually part of why I rebuilt ours when we bought the house, rather than replacing it. The house hadn't been winterized and the pump froze (cracked the impeller housing). But the guy at the well place said that the newer 1/2 hp pumps were weak sauce compared to the older ones. And it was cheaper to buy a new housing than a whole new pump, so it was a win/win.

Just hook it up to 220v instead of 115v (assuming it runs off 115v..). It's basically like supercharging the pump. #science.

Seriously though, could you re-wind it (like creating a high output alternator?)? With my Caucasian privilege I've only ever had town water.

When we were doing the MIL's this fall, I went out with the contractor and we had trouble finding a 3/4, the 1/2 said it was enough but I held off, we found one at our last stop to get the final supplies. After reading this, and others comments I'm happy I held off! So far it is fine, we keep it at about 40 psi in the pressure tank.

edit: was tractor supply branded. first tsc we went too were out.

Ours is at the bottom of a well

I'm sure it's theoretically possible, but I don't know that anybody sells 'kits' for it. You'd have to dismantle the old pump motor and see if you could find the individual component parts in the aftermarket. Of course, the aftermarket parts would probably be the same ones they're using in the new pumps, so after a great deal of time and effort you'd have a newly-rebuilt 1/2 horse pump that only worked as well as the other new ones.

That's the responsible approach, just hook up the 220 and throw the switch!

On a related note, I picked up an 18v kit for my kids' power wheel. Should be here later this week :burnrubber:

I've had that before. Sometimes it's important to remember why you left in the first place. :notsure:

Not that it isn't a good pump. May not be the right pump for YOUR application.
There is just more to it than gpm.
Feet of head for a given gem, and pressure differential, etc.
Impeller speed, etc. The same HP pump at 1800rpm, will perform differently than it would at 3600rpm. Housing will be different, etc.

Interestingly, the well guy called me back and said based on the specs of the pump and how shallow my well is he thinks it should have absolutely no problems so he wants to take a look in person.

I have had well water most of my life. I had a few years in a house with town water and I wasn't a fan of the chlorine smell. I can smell it from the sink if I use hot water at work.

Anyone have a lead on apartments near URI or lower RI? The school doesn’t have enough housing for all of the students and my kid has been waitlisted.

If your kid has friends to be roomates with in a house that will be easier. In my experience there aren’t very many 1br apartments in the southern ri area, some pop up on Craigslist from time to time. Narragansett town council also restricted number of occupants allowed in rental houses which is straining supply of available rentals. Durkin cottages and Anne Obrien realty are 2 of the bigger seasonal rental companies, might have something in the 1-2br range

Makes sense. Smart to dig in, and get all the information, and determine if there is a problem.

I am NOT a fan of the parts cannon.
