Is there a thread for those who have a manual and this tune? Would be curious in their opinions and feedback

To flash the KDMax tunes you need the vFTune software. If you do not have the vFTune software you cannot get the KDMax unless you pay a tuner to flash your truck. OVTune flash will not work for .vft files.
The software can be purchased for like $350 but then you also would need to buy the KDMax tune. If you're interested in building tunes and tweaking other tunes that people have made then the software will be good for you. If you just want to tune once and be done with it, just pay an installer in/near your area.

I'm running this tune on a manual. Haven't had a chance to do a long drive with it yet, but doing some day to day things (a few miles at a time), I'm pretty impressed.

The overall throttle application is smooth and predictable, good tip in power, gear to gear consistency is good, also.

Can't really speak to MPG much at the moment, short drives aren't generally real good at that anyway (when I look at the key off stats, it's in the 14-15 mpg range for a 2-4 mile city drive).

I was running the Ovtune 2.0 prem before. I'd say this one is notably better, overall. I think there's still a couple of good bits in 2.0 also, though.

Edit: Side note, I did my own flashing with vftuner, @PapaRee just attached the tune to the DM, and I went from there.

I have OV tune and software already...
Why do I have to have someone in my area? Cant get the files to flash on my own?

to be clear..you are saying that somebody could pull the ecu....send it to you....you load the tune on it / send back....and when it arrives it will be a plug n play solution?.....if so, what kind of turnaround time do you think?....3-4 days there ...2-3 days process....3-4 days back.........8-12 days total?

Good to hear. Would be interested to hear more after you get some more miles on it.
What makes it better the OV?
Why does it seem to feel better when shifting?

Are there more MT guys who have this that can chime in?

Maybe @JDKred just needs to upgrade to the VfTuner software for the $79 deal to be able to fladh the .vft files?

Mat's Ovtune is a system to flash tunes to your truck and you can change tire size, gears, and much much more. Mat sells a tune pack that are a step up or two from the factory tune and you get about 20+ tunes too try. His tunes aren't bad BUT if your truck has bigger tires, regeared, or extra heavy then people seek out performance tunes from others like @PapaRee, @TWTaco, or @Mooseditty17. Others who bought the tune kit will make their own from the factory and Mat's tunes. Hope this helps answer your question.

Oh yeah, it was free for dongle users and $79 for other OVTune guys. Scratch that $350 and replace it with $79

You have OVTune software - you don't use the OVTune flash software for .vft files. You use vFtune. Do you have vFtune software? If no, then you cannot flash .vft files. All KDMax and otherwise "custom tunes" by anyone who is making them are currently .vft files.

This is the way to go. Assuming you can get an answer that is. I put my case in on the 7th and so far nothing. Just want to try these tunes here or at the very least get my Flash Manager back after upgrading my laptop.

Ideally I’d like my flash manager back and whatever it’s replacement is to flash tunes without VF or any editors. But I’d still consider upgrading to VF for $80, if I could.

Apparently they’re slammed but that was the same last March a year ago when I ordered too. Seems to be a perpetual problem.

Maybe by May I’ll be up and running on one of these community tunes .

I have heard the older versions of VF can still flash using a tool that’s linked to your old registration for OVTune Flash Manager. Assuming your key is still good for your System ID. Paparee has the files for this.

Yes. If you have the old kit with a registered computer.
You can use the vf flash tool to flash the tune. It flashes vft files.
    vf flash 1.3.2.
I will send you a copy with the tune files.

I just bought one to load a tune on. Currently I do not have any.
If someone wanted to pull their ECM and send it to me, I would do it.
You would be without your truck until I shipped it back.
If you are interested PM me.

Thanks for chiming in Kreg. @JDKred is in UT and PM’d me and I was slow to respond. Looks like you’ve got him sorted. I sent him some feedback from the last 2 MT’s I flashed via PM.

@JDKred if you need any help I’m in SLC but headed to Moab the rest of the week. Not sure where you are in UT but I’ll help you if I can.

Another idea is to buy a used ECU for your truck or get one from a wrecked tacoma (same year model) and ship it to me to flash the tune on.
Then I ship it to you with the tune flashed, you swap out yours, then ship it to me to replace the one I sent you. Like a core exchange.
I would think this would only be a good option for someone who did not want to get VFtuner and did not have anyone close to them to tune their truck.

I was going to wait to share my thoughts, but I figure I'd give me two cents now, and then follow up in another week or two after I do more driving.

Just got the KDMax tune on my 2021 TRD Sport MT (located here in Utah). I hadn't tuned my truck before (it only has 1500 miles). Current set up is with a 3/2 lift, running 285/75r16's. First, shout out to @TWTaco and @BortisYeltzen. These two were so responsive and helpful and both went above and beyond in getting me this tune.

I can't say how it compares to the OV tune. But here's what I will note so far (already drove it close to 100 miles today on the freeway and around town).

    1) Setup. I was shocked. Took 5 minutes.
    2) Shifting. it's better! Shifting from 1-4 is notably smoother. 4 to 5 is still clunky, but that's the accumulators fault.
    3) Power. Low end is vastly better in 1st. The power is instant, with no bogginess. 2nd and 3rd gear are responsive and smooth. That low end access to more power is partly what is helping smooth out the shifting. The pedal is also more responsive (feels right...not like having a wonky pedal commander). One thing I noticed on the freeway is that it feels like there is now a more even distribution of power between 5th and 6th gear. I was able to cruise in 6th gear at 70+ mph, even when going up hill. Power is also felt evenly throughout the entire RPM range within each gear, rather than just at 3k rpms and above (no more weird v-tech feeling...it's fantastic).
    4) MPG. may be too early to tell, but I'm getting 1.2 mpg better than normal on the drive I just took. Running 87 octane. (and I wasn't always light with the pedal).

I was skeptical to get the tune, but I'm already so glad I did it. IT MAKES THE MANUAL EVEN BETTER GUYS. I'll report more on MPG and such in a couple of weeks.
