The Dead Don't Die, yeah the Cohen brothers. Sturgill did the theme song and it pops into the movie a lot and they talk about it. It's a pretty dumb movie but it's amusing.

Update on my 07 Prerunner...So the noise has gone, but I thought my pinion bearing was the next problem...Turns out, my carrier bearing is fading fast..And the Transmission Output seal is leaking..My friend who has a shop diagnosed it today...Hopefully it won't be any worse than the output shaft bushing I have yet to read up on...

I haven't done trans output seals on a Tacoma, but have on a Ranger and older "Toyota Pickup" (pre-Tacoma), and they have been pretty straightforward/easy. If you mean "carrier bearing" as in the differential, those are obviously more involved. If you mean the driveshaft center support (that some people call the carrier bearing), those are easy-peasy too (well, unless there's rust issues).

    Good thread here, y'all.

A little of my own diagnosing issues...

Working on a million things on my '05 2.7 4x4 this month since it's at 265k and counting, and it can never just be ONE thing, can it?

New rotors, pads, AND calipers (long story on my calipers, but that's a different thread) last week.
New Bilstein 4600 shocks last week
Installing 4600 struts in the front as soon as I can find someone who is willing to do the job without selling me parts (Anyone got a suggestion near Durham, NC?)
    New tires today

    Anyway, back to bearings:

I bought my truck with 168k miles on it in 2014. Did both front bearings not long after that because it was clear they were toast. A mechanic did one, and I did the other with a friend after ordering an assembly from a nice guy on here.

I have got a bit of a roar over 55mph. It could be that my back tires have been SO out of balance this last little bit (and I kind of think it's in the back?), but how likely it is my replacement bearings might be causing a problem after less than 100k miles? Does anybody know if the back bearings on Tacomas go as easily as the front ones seem to?

Post-brakes, I also have a weird grinding sound in the sharpest left turns (which sounds like it's the left front driver's side wheel, but I hear y'all on tricky noise locations!) that definitely was NOT there before the brake job. Everything is greased well, and all of the brake parts are new. As soon as I have the truck back from the tire place I'll check to see if the dust shield is bent, and I'll do all the shake tests... but it just occurred to me reading here that it could--I guess--be a bearing again. I didn't notice anything in particular spinning the front wheels after the brake job, but maybe I should try a little harder!

My interstate handling is NOT good right now, but I just finished a stint working around DC on their godawful roads and my alignment is always GONE after that (especially with old shocks/struts), so I had assumed that was the cause. Literally, potholes up there that could eat a Prius.

    Any thoughts?

Carrier bearing is the same as the center support...The transmission shaft rear seal is easy also...Get a bearing puller from Harbor Frt so ya don't scratch the area around the seal..Some vids use a 1" Union ? ..Its a piece used in plumbing..It works much better tapping the new seal into place..Worth it.

For me the front bearings sounded like they were a second engine up front. If you're hearing it from the back then it likely isn't the fwbs. Those bearings in the back aren't as susceptible to failure. My initial thought for you is driveline vibration since it doesn't sound like you're 100% hearing it behind you. I'd inspect or have inspected the driveline system and the rear wheel bearings. It could also be a transmission shudder, if it's an auto. Put it in 4 instead of D and see if it still roars at 55mph.

And I swear Tak1313, I've replaced both front bearings, the center support bearing, and the trans seal..That goes back to the original racket that was so loud...But now, I have a " cavitation " like a boat in reverse...I can slowly back up and feel a vibration that feels like it ..could ..be in the driveshaft...I'm afraid that 1. I might have misaligned the drive shaft in reassembly, or 2. Something really be wrong in the transmission...I'm driving it and it's ok when I'm on the road..But reverse or turning the wheel at 2 or 3 mph..This shuddering happens...Stops when the wheels straightened...I'm perplexed at the moment...Plus its one of these magic transmissions that is sealed and I'm worried about that as well...I haven't read a damn thing that I like about those...Help a old guy out here..Throw some of your ideas out here for me !

I'll be checking these ideas in the morning..Thanks for that...I'll explain best I can for now..Both front bearings are good and there's no noise..However, this drive train "shudder" is something that I read about also...This shudder is pretty much when I'm putting foward while turning the steering wheel OR in reverse and not even have to turn...I get a shudder and I swear its the rotation I feel ( like its the driveshaft ) I just knew replacing the center support bearing would alleviate this, but it actually is worse now...WTF did I do ?

I was hoping to find a answer to my problem in this thread but I don’t think it’s in here. So for some information,
I have a 2006 dcsb TRD off-road, 180k miles on it 3” lift, tent, rack, tools, etc. I’ve been having a growling noise when turning right for the past several months. Was told it was a bad wheel bearing so I went ahead and replaced both front wheel bearings and the growling is still there. Like others it goes away when turning left but resumes when turning right or continuing straight. I’ve also recently replaced all u-joints and carrier bearing. What should I be looking at now that could also be making the noise. I’m currently a college student and am getting tired of spending money trying to fix these sounds only to not be fixing anything that was faulty or making the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure, but I am confused why it would only happen turning and in reverse. There's plenty of balance issues with the drivelines though.

I put the truck in 4wd yesterday to test it out and it’s slightly quieter but I can still hear it.

I definitely have a delayed response after shifting to D which was part of my original problem a few dozen texts ago...We 1st thought the deal was the pinion bearing...I've been working around that and trying to prove that wrong ( and save big bucks too...) but the crush doodad has definitely gotta be replaced...I wonder if the ring gears can cause this shudder...I swear, when all this is done, there's gonna be no less than 3 items that have simultaneously gone bad...My mind is shot..lol

Hmm, I'm still thinking needle bearings because of your lift and having swapped the wheel bearings. It happens in neutral too right?

I haven’t tried neutral yet. I’ll give that a go. If it still happens in neutral that would more than likely be the needle bearing?
