I got the replacement tail light harness today, and this weekend the cap seen some snow. dog loved the doggie windows. I didnt see any leaks, only a spilled dog water bowl

 

Man, I can’t imagine 6 ft lbs of torque doing that. Are you sure your using an inch lbs torque wrench and not ft lbs wrench because 70 foot lbs would do that for sure but not 70 inch lbs.

 

So I was able to switch the pins/wires in the harness to get it to work. Takes about 5 minutes and is way faster than waiting for a new harness.

 

Also, no need to drill a hole to get your wiring through.

 

Mines doing the same and it was torqued to spec and has the rubber block underneath. I backed it off and triple checked it.

 

70 ft-lbs is going to do a hell of a lot more damage than that. I'm pretty sure the bolt would be long gone before you reach it, and the bolt probably would not be the first thing to go.

Mine looks the same. I actually bought another torque wrench not totally trusting my harbor freight one.

For some quick math, 6 ft-lbs of torque on an M10 bolt is around 915 lbs of clamping force, 9 ft-lbs of torque is about 1,375 lbs of force. I kind of suspect 6 ft-lbs is sufficient, unless you have a bunch of weight on top of the cap AND do some steep roll off-roading.

What do other caps require to be secured? Are there any torque guidelines on the bed rails in general?

 

70 ft lbs would rip the clamp rail off the side of the bed goober.

Kingair and Aodrn put my mind to rest for now but I’ll be watching the welds on those gussets above the pulled down metal.

 

Well, looks like I stand corrected.
I was able to get four of the six torqued to 9ft lbs, the others I snugged down.
Maybe my torque wrench is reading wrong.

 

I used 9ft lbs on all 6. Heard some cracks/snaps and the cap rail definitely deflects down to the bed rail a bit, but overall not that bad - not nearly what trd4x4boy has in the middle. I was really nervous about 9ft lbs and watched closely...If i did it again - probably wouldn't go to 9, probably 6 like has been mentioned.

So here’s what has happened so far:

- I received a new harness with three pins due to the LED tail lights.

- When I installed it, the 3rd brake light didn’t work. I had to change the wires that I “fixed” earlier which had them backwards. It would appear that either RSI made the switch in the new harness to correct for the earlier error or LED tail lights have a different pin out with respect to polarity.

I don’t have much confidence that I will be receiving a new harness with the wires corrected so I just used shrink tubing and soldered everything together nicely now.

The fun part was red ballpoint pen was used to write the serial number. Not too visible.

Progress, I got it together, all the clips in so making progress.

 

I was thinking about bed stiffeners since most people with caps and especially caps and weight on a rack run them. I’m thinking they aren’t really needed with the rsi cap though. With a traditional cap, the bed rails keep the cap from wanting to push out. Fiberglass doesn’t have the same rigidity. With the rsi the cap would help keep the bed sides square.

Anyone else thought about this?

 

I think any help to keep the bed in one piece is a great idea

 

An ounce/$100 of prevention vs horrible results.

 

It may not need it but I bought the Total Chaos bed stiffeners to make sure i don't have the issue. It's cheap insurance as others have said.

 

I had thought about it, and came to the same conclusion - the cap should retain its shape better. The bed has more give though, so as you load up the cap with say the 700lb static weight its rated for, all of that is being transferred to the bed's frame, plus the ~180-200lbs of the cap itself. So what is the frame of the bed rated for, and where is the stress point going to be when the rigid steel cap holds its shape?

I don't know that the bed stiffeners are really the answer to this, and obviously 900 lbs on a frequent basis isn't everyone's reality, but I like exaggerating to illustrate the point.

 

I'm not sure if this has been posted already, but rather than sifting through 48 pages I thought it might help someone else here.

The following can be used on the roof rails with the nuts & just the eye bolts inside underneath into the brass insert nuts:

Eye Bolts: Amazon P/N B07G212F6H -- ~$13 for (6)

Square Nuts: Amazon P/N B07WDS7B3L -- ~$8 for (20)

I'm sure there's lots of other ways but I can say that these two parts work.

 

Anyone know of some good straps for the EvoA Molle panels that don’t involve drilling?
