Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
No doubt you are. And you have it in the most awesome of colors.

My only point was that most people who have one probably don't need that capability as much as they just want it.

I use my Pro off road quite a bit in SoCal and AZ. I personally think the TRD Pro is the perfect balance of DD and off-road capability for most people. Those who don't have a Pro and claim better performance in their twin arb locked, long travel king TRD OR...no shit. Muh Pro comes with blacked out badges and lights from da factory..an dat grill an scewp...

Just letters trd or pro, imo, cater more to ones image or ego that would be sucked into buying these trucks if its fairly well known their basically similar as an sr5 except for a few different options. I have a buddy that owns a trd or and its never been off the pavement...this guys has a huge ego. I've referred to him as ''bull man dan''.

I looked at an SR5 version of my truck when I was shopping for one and soon decided that popping for the TRD/Technology package made sense for my needs. A year in and I’m still happy with my choice. My Taco is not my DD but see’s frequent (at least once a month) road trips which generally involve some light-moderate four-wheeling. Oh, and I park it in the dirt behind my garage so the OR was a must

Exactly you bought a TRD the way you're you're suppose to buy a TRD, because you liked the trim level and the options.
I bought a SR because I knew I would be fine with the standard options (Which by the way are not that bad, Power Windows Power Door Locks Radar Cruise Control and Android Auto). The money I saved on my purchase has already gone toward Air lockers, tires, suspension and a winch. Things I could not get on a TRD Pro any way.

To many people get suckered into thinking that there buying a more capable truck because it says it says "Off Road" or "Pro" on it.
    It's a trim level, it's more options, it's a snorkel, it's leather. It's not more capability.

My SR 4x4 is just as capable as any TRD Off Road or TRD Pro and with the front and rear ARB Air lockers it's even more capable.

    =)

Your right, no rear locker, tires, or suspension on my Pro :jerkoff:

I can see your point however my main goal in buying a Taco was to have something I could take off-roading/four-wheeling right out of the box without having to make any significant mods or upgrades. Which is weird for me since prior to my Taco I've built, re-built or significantly modded every vehicle I've owned. I have other, project vehicles (see my album on this site for a couple of them) which keep me busy, so building even a modern truck just wasn't in the cards right now. Currently my Taco is parked (in the dirt) next to my VW Thing which I'm in the process of swapping a Subaru engine into.

An SR or and SR5 would have also been fine, but for me my Taco is my first brand-new car or truck so I wanted some extra's on it. My other trucks are all either base models or mid-level which are nice, but I wanted this one to be a little more than that. As far as capability goes; in my experience driver ability has a lot more to do with that then how a vehicle is built. Last Fall in Moab I watched a group in basically bone-stock, Wranglers tackle a pretty tough obstacle (Wipe-out Hill on the Seven Mile Trail) with no problems. Later I found-out the guys in that group were a bunch of Engineers for a popular tire company, so they knew what they were doing.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy wrenching and building as much as some on this site, but my point behind buying a TRD OR was it had the features I knew I'd want (MT, electric Rear Locker, decent suspension and skidplates) which helps with my four-wheeling trips but it's also comfortable for a non-offroading weekend getaway with my GF to go antiquing along the Central Coast (don't judge me; she's hot, it was her birthday and I did scope-out some trails I plan on exploring the next time we're in the area). So heated seats, a nice stereo, A/C, radar cruise control are nice to have in a vehicle which I can also get dirty if I want. By comparison, not long after we met when I still had my previous 4x4 my GF and I took a similar trip up the coast and she remarked that she'd never met a guy who carried more tools than he did luggage LOL!

For me, if I'd wanted a project 4x4 I would have kept my previous 4x4 (an old Isuzu Amigo 4x4) and continued building it or gotten an early 4Runner.

    Plot twist:

The 4th Gen Tacoma will feature the GR Pro, GR Off Road, and GR Sport trims replacing the TRD name.

Thought the same thing, but it was quite interesting to watch. It explains in detail how TRD triumphed, then went into detail of how GR sorta took the attention away from TRD.

You modified it to match the capability of a stock TRD Off Road and probably spent more than what a TRD Off Road costs.

My SR 4x4 was under 30K TRD's are a bit north of 40K

I spent no where near 10K not even in the same ball park.

Look I throw you TRD Pro owners a bone. I think there awesome trucks. I really do. I am only saying that I think Toyota needs to make them more Pro centric to help justify the price and compete in the mid sized truck market. That's all I am saying.

Is that all you're saying? It seems to me that this entire thread you've been dumping on TRD truck owners and pumping your chest about how smart you are because you bought an SR5.

It really is this simple... some people buy the SR trim line with plans to build the truck how they want. Some people get the TRD OR/Pro, because they like the available options and want something off-road capable right out the box with minimal modifications required.

There's no right or wrong answer. You have your preferences, other people have theirs.

The 2 mile dirt road i like off is a mess every spring when the frost comes out...add days of heavy rain, the town closes off the road, only 4wd vehicles mainly trucks, or jeep like suv's will make it through. Years ago i even got stuck with my tundra when it got hung up in the deep mud. This tacoma sr5 is so much better. I see no need for anything else, as i don't do any heavy off-roading like i use to back in the day. I too am very happy after a year now with this sr5...glad i wasn't talked into a trd, as dealers i visited were pushing them at the time.
