I heard it can be painted when it’s on the truck but idk if that’s true.

if you’ve painted it beforehand, would welding simply be a matter of grinding the edges bare where it will connect to the truck, and hopefully the weld will penetrate deep enough to be strong?

I’m rattle canning mine while it’s on the truck.

I know about steel it, I was commenting the ability to paint while it’s on the truck to @TacoTuesday1 I haven’t as any issues having it welded first. Many of the pictures of @81Trekker work has shown them welded on the truck before painting.

The majority of the kit is exposed once burnt on so I'm sure it's just fine to paint after the welding is done. Was just a nice little touch I added to my kit being I'm not trying to get this done in a weekend. I've got some down time.

Steel-It is weldable but it has a curing time of 5-10 days before you can weld over it. It's not something you spray and weld over the next day. There are perks to this ability but not a one size fits all.

Lol @ welding over steel it, such a joke... it’s no different than regular spray paint. I would never weld anything that’s painted, so toxic and makes the welds look awful

I did that with a ring gear to get it back onto the carrier. Man the house reeked of baked gear oil.

My first experience with the product was just that. Couldn't get a clean weld without porosity. Such a joke. Then I spoke to someone who informed me about the curing time and gave it another try with success. My welds aren't nearly as clean as yours though so now I just have an excuse...

I didn't say to huff it as you're welding o_O should I clean my gears off before I perma locker them too ?

Their marketing sure does hype up that it burns away clean

    upload_2021-3-30_12-15-54.jpg

I've used weld through self etching primers many times while doing auto body work in spots where you will not be able to properly seal the metal afterward IE: an overlapped seam in a floor pan, bed floor ( you know...back when Toyota still used metal ) or firewall that you are rosette welding ( not dropping a line of dimes on ) and both sides of the seam will be forever buried. Clean surfaces + self etching weld through primer + good seam sealant = lasts forever. I've seen people try to just use seam sealant only but it never works, there are always going to be hand prints IE: oils or moisture trapped in the fab process on the bare metal. You'll think it's all good until the paint starts bubbling up in a few years aka the creeping death of your $10k paint job :annoyed:

Welding is a lot like painting... it’s all in the prep. A huge reason my wells look like they do is because we use good steel (not coated with mill scale) and I always DA the steel first.

I've welded light tabs onto a steel it coated bumper and yeah it just burns off like any other spray paint. If you're getting porosity @desertjunkie760 , I've noticed any factory paint or primer left in an area will infect a weld pretty quickly.

I experience the porosity when I tried to spray the paint and weld the next day or two, not realizing there was an actual science to the product.

When I built my bed rack the first coat was with Steel-It since I was planning on adding features to it later on but didn't want to leave it raw. No porosity once I let the coating cure.

@desertjunkie760 gotcha - misread thinking you were still getting some porosity on the lca relocation even with cured product

Nope. I'm still in the fitment stage. Haven't started welding yet. Planning on doing that this weekend.
