Haven’t used ramps in a while. Jack stands to get the truck off the ground.

Kind of a tangent, but I built a jack stand out of Glue Lams recently, when steel jack stands were getting recalled. I've since painted it black to seal the endgrain, but I can't locate an updated picture. It's about 21" tall, weighs about 40 lbs, and is very secure. I feel much better getting under there now. The underside is hollowed out so the walls are 4" thick.

I recall seeing some jack stands with a jack incorporated into it.

I had a grand national. Jacking that thing was a pain. I had to drive up onto 4 2x4s to get it up slightly, then I could get the jack under it and pump the handle. Without the 2x4s, the jack would fit but the handle would only pump about 2 inches.

If your ramps are trying to slide before you get on them, fasten a small chain or rope with knots to the thin end and stretch it out the way you'll be driving on. the rope or chain under the tire will hold things until you get the truck's weight on the ramps. Kinda like stepping on a loose shoelace :)

Lotsa turbo power, lotsa. With an electronic boost controller more so. But it ate rear ends and handled like a Buick. I don’t miss it as much as I miss my Supra.

If I had my preference I would also prefer a Supra over any Buick.

I had some of this foam sheathing laying around the house and used it to work under the truck on a gravel drive... worked very well for free.
won't soak up water, and oil/grease wipes right off for a while.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
    Ramp question!

I've never used ramps before, and I've never had a 4-wheel drive vehicle before. Is there any reason NOT to use 4-LO to get the truck up on the ramps.

Picked up a pair of Black Widow ramps. Only slightly better than "Widow Maker" as a name for a device with safety concerns. Chose these because the entire underside is a matrix of plastic rather than being hollow. This means you can't stack them, but... meh.

A tip to keep the ramps from moving as the tires enter the ramp.

Tie a length of rope, strap or.... to the leading edge of the ramp. The tire will roll onto the rope/strap before entering the ramp. The weight of the truck on the rope/strap will keep the ramp from moving.

Be safe. I've never trusted ramps. I prefer jack stands.

No, no reason not to use 4-LO, I've done it myself. The lower gear range sometimes makes it easier for me too since my truck is a manual transmission.
My garage floor is pretty slick so I've had to resort to this several times.

That is a good tip. The one upside of using ramps is that you still have the wheels and tires on the vehicle. I use them on my truck when touching up my undercoating. If the truck would fall, there's still a lot of room under there to not get crushed. Now a jack and jack stands with the wheels and tires off, you'd better make sure your base is good and the positioning of the stands is secure.
Like others have said here, I'll grab my truck and shake it real hard to make sure it's not coming down, before removing wheels and tires.

ummmm.....just because you have the truck on jack stand doesn't mean you need to remove the wheels.

I just completed U-joint/Carrier Bearing replacement with the truck on jack stands and wheels still on the truck. I think there are many tasks where the wheels do not need to be removed while having the truck on jack stands.

    Agree.
In the late 1970s we lived in a mobile home and I built a deck and had some lumber leftover so I repurposed it rather than throwing it out. Made two of these and still use them. They have a leading-edge so once the tire starts to roll up on them they stay in place.

i always hated using ramps until i got my 2021 with 4x4. it's much easier to get up the ramps in 4-lo without feeling like you are going to crash off the end of them.

ummmmm... I realize that. IF I'm going to take off the wheels and tires...
