Tell your "friend" to keep their FNing hands off the controls. They aren't even allowed to touch the radio or climate controls.

YOU are the DRIVER. They can ask for YOUR permission to fiddle with knobs, buttons or levers.

Anything to the left side of the glove box is under your control. If they don't like it, then they can find another ride.

Totaled it! Should sell it to me half price.

All jokes aside, I've accidently shifted to neutral when I was reaching for my phone a few times while driving. Went right back to drive and truck has been fine for the last 5 years and 85k miles.

You can go in REVERSE over 20 (25 to be safe) to turn on the back camera. i do it all the time. its GREAT at night to get someone off your ass when the lights go on.. funny as hell when they slam on the brakes.

Tell your friend to keep his hands to himself.

He has no business holdin your shifter when you are driving.

I shifted into reverse on the Highway a couple of weeks ago. I’ve driven stick for so long, I wasn’t thinking and shifted into 5th ... or so I thought. It made a horrible grinding sound and scared the shit out of me.

o_O ok? o_O was one of these vehicles a Toyota Tacoma? I don't doubt you've seen this happen at a drag strip, but don't think this is an issue for the OP.

@Foxface918 , I've many a time shifted into Neutral while driving. Did it to help explain what a rev limiter was to my wife awhile back. Neutral, floor it, bounces off limiter, let go of gas, shift back into gear. Thinking back, we were even taught to shift into neutral and use parking/e-brake to stop car in drivers-ed. We all had to do this a few times. Car was no worse for wear, and it had seen hundreds, if not thousands, of drivers by the time I got to it! lol.

I bump it into neutral a lot when I’m coasting down a long steep decline or hill. Has never seemed to bother it. Yet, once again, this damn place has me thinking otherwise! Should I stop doing this?

I can confirm from first hand experience, if you are going above 30mph in a 3rd gen automatic and you push it forward into reverse it has a safety cut out that allows the rear camera to come on but it defaults to neutral. The trans doesn't even miss a beat, no grinding or freak out, it just turns the rear camera on, let off the gas and drop it back into drive.

Its not hurting anything, but you are not taking advantage of DFCO when cruising downhill in gear.

    Were you over 20MPH ?
then bullshit. Toyota even has a engineer somewhere on youtube showing it as a safety feature.

Yes. It's harder on your brakes and believe it or not you actually get worse mileage.

Yeah, you’re right. I always forget about the damned DFCO. Although, where I typically do this, I don’t have to brake at all.
