Two completely different new Tacoma smells!

Well, this is the weirdest post I’ve ever made, I’m pretty sure.

I got my new ‘21 OR three months ago, and it has a very identifiable “new Toyota” smell inside. I find it pleasant, but others don’t. It’s that material/plastic/rubber combo of goodness. I’m always sad when it wears off after a while.

Last night, my friend got a new ‘21 OR. When I checked it out, it has a completely different new car smell. Best I can describe it, it smells like brand new sneakers.

We checked and both trucks VIN’s start with a 3 which I think means they are both Mexico made? Our first thought was different plants, but I guess not.

Anyway, I’ve just never seen that with a new car. Usually BMW’s smell like BMW’s, MB’s smell like MB’s, and Honda’s smell like Honda’s. Etc etc. Each brand is distinct but consistent, but I guess something with Toyota is variable enough to drastically alter it.

I do have the all weather mats and he does not, but I didn’t think that was enough to completely change the new car smell.

 

I’ve never heard of this about a vehicle. I was looking for Tacoma for months (and looked at other brands) before I got mine and they all smelled “new”. I wonder if something happened to your friends Tacoma.

 

Dump a bottle of Mop & Glo on the back floor, smells like a new car for several years, ask me how I know.

 

The smell is usually the offgassing of the various finishes and fabrics. Not sure why they would be different though. Could be the mats, or could be a different material under the seat fabric in the cushion material?

 

I bought my 2010 it smelled new. I added weathertechs floormats months later and it did add a different smell.

 

somedays the ocean smell like seaweed. On other days it smells like crab farts.

 

That is so funny. Bought my 2020 used last Oct and the interior smells great...not new car smell but.... just very subtle and pleasant. Every time I get in it, I comment to myself that I want to find whatever scent, they (whoever), used. I just assume the dealership sprayed some fragrance or product. Not sure what it is, but I like it. Just surprised its lasted so long.

 

There is a Toyota detailing spray they use to detail the interior. It has a distinct smell and smells good IMO. I don't know of any other brand that smells like it. You can buy it at the dealership parts counter.

There are 2 different assembly plants in Mexico so it is possible they were made in different places, does one have leather interior and the other cloth?

 

New cars of today, don't smell like new cars from 20 year ago. Probably from all the terrible plastics they used back then. Loved that smell. My month-old Tacoma has a tiny hint of the smell I remember, but for the most part, it does have that new sneaker smell. My 4 year old will take care of it soon enough. It'll be smelling like Cheez its and apple sauce in no time.

 

My truck smells like the yellow rose of Texas. God bless Texas.

 

I personally look forward to the day that I can make the valet gag. My truck smells like wet dogs and spicy chili farts. The kind that you feel the slight burn in your upper sinus before you actually register what's going on.

Ha I can't believe you brought up the new sneaker smell. When I first got my truck it smelled strongly, and specifically, like a sneaker store. And several people came to the same conclusion when they got in it without me prompting them.
