Many years ago during my apprenticeship, I proudly showed a journeyman (excellent and extremely knowledgeable) hey Ernie bet you don't have one of these, my mechanic stethoscope, to which he pulled a ginormous screwdriver from his toolbox and placed the handle to his ear.

I wasn’t talking about a long screw driver.

Yeah I know, we use a long screw driver. My friends use a full electronic thing that sticks to parts and lets you test multiple things at once.

One has to wonder if the pcv and oiling deisgn of these motors are the main culprit for engine noise or catastrophic failures.

Pcv problems can lead to excessive crank case pressure build up, which in turn can cause seal leakage.

I'm starting to think mine has a pcv issue seeing my rear main has seepage at 16k

As for the OP, the ticking noise in the video you posted sounds like a "sticky" lifter. The member who posted that video is having a shit show rodeo with the dealer he's using, we may never get the final answer on that one.

Dude take it in asap. That sounds horrible. Sounds like my Jeep I had. 10k miles and a lifter failed and the cam lobe got messed up too. Had a loud tick.

Also aluminum broom works great as a stethescope

What did you hear with the stethoscope? A noise. What was it I don't know.

Oh man that's not a good sound. Does it go away when the RPMs go up or does it get works? Is it doing that while driving or only while idling? It could be a few different things I would start with the easiest one. Make sure knock isn't coming from a loose idler pulley on the serpentine belt. Turn it on look at the belt make sure it's not jumping. Usually when I hear a ticking sound it's a lifter tick. This is def not that.

Any updates on this? I think mine is starting to have a similar issue. Just had timing cover work done as well.

My Toyota Tacoma 2017 sport with 68k all of sudden started making that same noise, traded it in for an off-road before I got it figured out. Best of luck to you, drove me crazy. I did the trade because I was worried it was a lifter and I like the off road better. I got talked out of the off-road by the salesman when I bought the sport.

my off-road seems to have some of the bugs worked out and it has been outstanding. I don’t know what the deal was was with that sport.

At the dealer now, they are saying it's a vacuum pump for my 2021 TRD OR with 450 miles on it

I have a family member who is a service manager at a dealership. I dropped it off and showed him the video. He had the head tech take a look at it, but couldn't replicate the noise. It's strange because mine is not constant so it's hard to nail down where it comes from.

When I bought my 2020, I thought WTF is all that noise?!!!

I put in my ol tried and true Oil additive, Archoil 9100. Minutes later most of the mechanical noise was gone. I've used this stuff for over 10 years, and I can say without doubt, it's one of the good ones.

    https://www.archoil.com/products/ar9100-oil-additive?variant=40925513166

Also FYI, Toyota oil has higher contents of Boron. The archoil is a Boron additive. Toyota feels Boron is important, and so does ArchOil.:amen:

There was an issue with vacuum pumps but pretty sure your OR doesn't have one. The brakes are electric/hydraulically assisted so no need for the vacuum pump.
