At some point doesn’t the Disney (and other stuff) become public usable (can’t think of better term)?

As I recall, Deadmau5 was trying to put his logo on BMX bikes or somesuch and so filed a trademark request with the US patent office. Which Disney strongly opposed and submitted a complaint basically. I think they finally came to terms with it all after much posturing.

Yeah copyrights expire after a certain number of years, I think it's the life of the person who applied for it plus 70 years. In 2024 some of their copyrights start to expire

It's Disney though so I'm sure they will find a way to stop it from happening

I though so, I have a buddy who is an artist and we were talking about this a few years ago. It seems Disney may have been able to do something to keep their stuff locked up a bit longer. I truly don’t remember what he was telling me.

yeah I remember that being in the news as well. I'm sure there are loopholes they can find/already found. With enough money you can get away with anything lol.

I know Mickey Mouse is the big one but I'd be curious about all their other characters as well, I'm guessing they are all Disney copyrights despite who actually created them since it was all done for Disney. Do they have to keep applying for extensions on all these characters?

I did a brief search and it looks like Steamboat Willie (the OG Mickey Mouse) is up for expiration in 2024 after several extensions

If you change small things here and there, each iteration gets its own exemption.

Anyone remember when Keurig's copyright ran out on their cup design? Holy crap, the market got super flooded with everyone and their mother was making cups.

Trademark, copyright, and patent are different. The Toyota emblem is a trademark. Those are renewed typically every 5 years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark#Maintaining_rights The Keurig K-cup design was protected by patents. Most US patents expire after 20 years. The K-cup patent expired in 2012.

Most big automakers have cross-licensing agreements in place for patents, so it's mostly unheard of for automakers to fight each other for patent infringement. However, they still fight over trademarks, though it usually doesn't escalate to lawsuits. Remember Ford complained about Toyota's T-150 branding, leading Toyota to rename it the Tundra: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1998-jun-17-fi-60642-story.html

If Toyota would stop slapping chrome on everything and usually in weird locations that look awkward (chrome front ends on trucks that have no other exterior chrome parts is particularly infuriating), this probably wouldn’t be an issue.

I’ll never understand why Toyota puts out stuff that doesn’t meet market demands and then hangs on to old stuff/trends just so that they can garner fake excitement about new products when they have essentially been trending for 10+ years. Like we all supposed to be excited that they came out with a truck black chrome (again with the chrome) instead of flat stuff.

Which is why I’m extremely skeptical about the upcoming tundra.
