I got new keys made at McGeorge Toyota for my '96 for $8.77 each including the key blanks. Dealers don't need the old key as they can cut new using Tascoma's VIN# info.
You do need to provide proof of ownership of truck though.
My old keys were too old and worn to duplicate.

That's what I did. Made extra copies for both Tacoma and Tundra.

To my knowledge, VIN number works for cross-referencing, to cut a key, if original locks. I don't know anyone who can cut keys, that have magical powers.
Once you get out of this situation, put a spare key in your wallet ;)

Yes that's what I meant. If original locks and ignition a dealer can cut a key via the VIN.

I locked my keys (both sets, including both FOBS) in my truck one day, at home. I called the dealer with the VIN#, and they cut me a new key.
The guy who cut the key, said no guarantee it will work. The key worked fine.

I got a new key cut at dealer over 10 years ago. It was around 60$ IIRC. last year I went to a locksmith, because my key would no longer lock the doors, or unlock/lock from the passengers door. They cut me a new key for 10 bucks. The key they cut me works even worse than the old ones I had. They told me they had to rebuild the locks and ignition for around 200$ I opted not to do it and I’m waiting till the locks fail completely, I can always get in through the rear slider when that happens. Part of me wonders if the locks are fine and if I were to get some cheap keys made at Walmart if all the locks would work fine...

Get a regular key made at the dealer. It cost me $17
Don't give them a key, give them the VIN # only.
Whoever cut the key for you originally, fucked up, or cut the key slightly off to sell a re-lock job.
The fact the key they cut you, does not work correctly in ALL the locks and ignition, is proof the key was cut wrong.

This was kind of my suspicion. I’ll try a new dealer key.

Probably could use a screw driver too. That's how most old Toyota trucks are.

I am not surprised it would be that expensive these days.

10 years ago in small town CO I paid like $7 to have a key cut from VIN with proof of ownership

Some lessons are expensive to learn others not so much.

I have a system that works I also don`t have a problem having 2 new chipped keys cut if needed

I went to my local dealer and they gave me ILCO brand keys. I was hoping for an OEM blank.

Shoot, my wife's old Rav4 was $3 for a spare key at the hardware store. Same for my truck. The current Rav4 she has has a chip but at least for that same $3 they cut me a door key in case she locks the keys in
