Just so I make sure I'm answering the question you're actually asking... Pay into something like what? Index funds, or the mortgage?

For investing, it's good to put money in whenever you can, and the general guidance is to do it gradually/incrementally over time, on a consistent schedule. Consistency is the key, so you aren't trying to "time the market." This is called "dollar cost averaging" and means that over time, you buy more securities when prices are lower and fewer when they are higher. If you can have it come straight out of your paycheck so you never see the money - even if it's only $100/pay period - that's even better.

As I read your question again, I realize that must be what you're talking about, b/c you wouldn't pay off your mortgage more over time in order to "take advantage" of your equity .

So, here's the thing. You should think of your house like a security (stock, fund, etc.). It's not exactly the same, but it's close and "the rich" think of houses just like they think about the TSLA or AMZN or APPL stock that they own. If the prices of those stocks went up, you don't sell them (until you need the money). My recommendation is to do the same with your home - don't take money out until you need it. Part of the reasons for that is that while the housing market has been going gangbusters for the last decade, it hasn't always done that. You don't want to take the "equity" out, and then not be able to afford your house should the market go down in the future. It is better to not be homeless when there is a downturn.

Additionally, a primary reason people sell is to move to a bigger/nicer (to them at least) house. It's much harder to do that if you've got to pay off a huge loan on your home, rather than put the stored equity towards the new house.

The one caveat to all this house guidance is with actual investment properties (i.e. if you own rentals). On those, leveraging the equity to purchase more rentals is something that is regularly done... but that's a significantly different situation than with your primary residence.

Probably a lot cheaper to just add a ford 19 gal tank and double the range.

Man interesting talk with a gas company tech today. Glad I actually called 811 before figuring out where we are going to put the garage. We have a petroleum gas line through our property that's in the area of where we want to build. (Everything else we knew was out of the way).

But man the gas line company wants the world pretty much. Don't build over the line (makes sense). O and we want 75 feet of unobstructed access on either side of the line.

Thankfully the tech who came gave a more realistic answer of just don't build over it or withing 10 feet of it for repair work....25 feet for "ah shit" events lol.

I was just glad that after giving me the information sheet and going over their desires that the tech gave a more realistic expectation of what they actually need. Which is just access for a backhoe to be able to get at the pipe. Even he laughed abit about their desires when he mentioned how many pipes they work on that are just in an alleyway with crap built right up to the alley.


We are going to do a 60x40 with 16ft high walls. So we can do a 15x40 or so mezzanine. Went back and forth on a lot of things size wise but since the wife is loving her job and we plan to stay, figured we might as well build a bit bigger lol.

It should be nice. Part of us moving was I would get to build a shop. It wouldn't be so big except the garage we do have....which is a nice 3 car garage size...the door is only 6'6" so my truck and our camper can't fit. Nor will the fj40 once it's done. So we are building bit bigger but a good portion is going to just be vehicle storage.

It's actually pretty interesting looking at costs from going from a 30x40 to 40x60. You'd think it would be a ton more, but outside of concrete it's really not. Price per sq ft actually went down

 

Are you doing just a metal building? Is it going to be insulated? Heated?

My minimum when we get to that point is a 30x40. 50x40 would be great. 60x40..sheeeet. I'd be in heaven.
