Rear driveshaft

Thanks for letting me sign up!! I’m new to this kind of thing, so bear with me please. My 2004 tacoma, extended cab, manual transmission, with the 3.4L engine has a bad u joint on the center joint. The big ass swivel joint looking thing in the middle by the center support. I tried to replace it with a joint I bought from oreillys. Big fail. My buddy which is a life long mechanic to this day that everyone depends on, couldn’t even find a correct joint for it. He did find one close, but it did not work. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. By advice, I mean a lot cheaper option than the dealership. And dorman is a little cheaper, but still crazy high for what I thought was going to be a $20 fix. Thanks for the reply!! But I don’t need the actual carrier bearing. I need a u joint that will work on that constant velocity joint.

I just replaced all the U-joints and Carrier Bearing on my '06 4WD, Access Cab. All the parts came from RockAuto.

I specifically bought the Spicer joints with the grease zerk on the bearing cap. IIRC, the Spicer P/N

$32 5-1330-1X U-Joint Kit

5-1330-1X for just under $21 for the rear prop shaft. There is a coupon code for a price reduction in the Vendor area of TW.

FWIW, you have to pull the entire rear prop shaft to do the work. Suggest to go ahead replace all the U-joints and the Carrier while your doing the work. After all, every joint and carrier has seen the same number of revolutions and environment.

I do not know if the prop shaft is the same beasty on the Gen 1 and the Gen 2.


FWIW, terminology is confusing in this area.
The Prop shaft runs from the tranny to the rear differential. Another Prop shaft runs from the transfer case to the front differential.
The drive shafts run from the front differential to the front wheels.

 

Thanks to all for replying!! And for the welcoming!! And I’ve noticed that the terminology is diff all over. It would have me mixed up until I learned how to figure out how to get what y’all were saying.lol. But I need the long piece that goes from the rear end all the way to the transfer case.

 

Call Tom Woods and order a single peice shaft. It'll solve all your problems.

 

I definitely wouldn’t mind going that direction. Do you have any contact info for Tom woods?
