Sup Kyle! I went in December last minute, had to burn some pto. But yea that trip really pushed me to do the conversion, getting stuck near Area 51 was kinda scary haha just about done, just gotta do the add switch, hubs, and cv and I’m all done

Damn dude! You get around! Jelous!

Aside from getting stuck that once you were able to do it all with just your locker?

If you don't mind me asking, round trip about how much did it run you in gas and all that?

How long did it take you to drive out there and back?

I still need to go out there but my living situation is about to change, once that's got settled I'll be ordering 4.88 gears once I get them in then I might start thinking about trips and stuff again, hopefully get my twin stick FJ case done and in somewhere in there as well but for right now I'm in a financial holding pattern.

Similar to what @6 gearT444E said, I wanted all of the 4WD business to happen at one place, and it was a style of shifter that is reminiscent of earlier Tacomas and 4runners. My setup will use a relay in place of the DPDT switch that most, if not all people on this thread are using. I am still working through the kinks of the wiring with the help of others but that is my goal.

I thought only the 4Runners with multi-mode transfer cases (full time 4wd/AWD) had the shifter side switch.

What does this achieve on the Tacoma with the J-shift case? Just want to be educated to see if this is something I want to do.

I guess my J shift 3rd gen Tacoma had a vacuum switched ADD?

The ADD just locks the CV axles to the front diff and disconnects for economy right?

I believe the full time FJ's have a non ADD front diff extension shaft?

For the most part, but I stayed away from places I could get stuck. I don’t remember how much but I ended up driving 6,000 miles with 16mpg average sooo quite a bit lol took about 24 hours to drive there. That’ll be cool, I’m loving my fj case even without 4wd lol

Can’t thank you enough:bowdown: I had your outline pulled up and plugged in wires just like you said and it lights up like it should. The switch is backwards (off in actually on) but it doesn’t matter bc the light only stays on when it’s activated, just like it should. I could reverse the switch but I would have to rewire the jumper wires and it’s a pain to wire up there lol Verified the diff was mechanically working too. Almost there:curls:

Ah cmon, do it! You’re 99% of the way to such a clean install. Take the 30 min to fix the wiring. Looks fantastic.

Good find! That's still way overpriced IMO. I can probably make them and sell them for around $80 to make it worth my while and still be cheaper than the alternative.

I got lucky that mine came with the whole shift lever and even the knob. I'm going to try my hardest to retain the factory rubber isolation bit and do any welding beneath it to get it where it needs to go. My OEM shift lever is the same design and the rubber makes a huge difference and keeping noise out of the cab.

    I have mods
Should be easy enough to do. Just cut out the curved part from the shifter, that will leave plenty of stick below the isolator and above the cap to weld to, with material to spare if you need to remove more.

That was exactly my plan. I have a 6 speed so I’ll have more room to work with too as far as shifter placement.

Just don't forget to slide the cap back on before you weld everything back together!

I was surprised that rubber thing doesn't make much difference, my twin sticks have no isolator and don't make much noise, or maybe I'm going deaf.
