    Well said.

It is my understanding that the ECU has different tables it references for shifting depending on what it *thinks* you are trying to do. One of the things you can do with the vF tuner software is make all of these maps identical. I have done this with my truck. It really really helps with the trucks predictability.

Edit: this is a big part of why ECT mode helps so much. There is only one shift map referenced when in ECT mode.

My understanding of the problem is that it is a characteristic of the vehicle stability control. It doesn't allow for a hard throttle when you are going around a sharp corner.

I have read about it and it does sound tempting. But I don’t want to risk the warranty. Hopefully it’ll never get to that. But if anything ever happens. I don’t want to give Toyota a trace of an excuse to try and put it on anything I did.
I did drive my 17 with ECT on for a while after that incident. But I do a lot of stop and go driving and ECT doesn’t give the best feeling in those situations. The gears are just too far apart.
What does surprise me. Is that they have allowed this to continue for so long. Specially that the issue seems to happen when you need that extra power the most in that split second. That split second could be the difference on getting out of the way of an incoming semi.

My thought was, I would rather give toyota an excuse to deny a warranty than risk not being able to get out of the way of that semi...

That’s another way to look at it. And I did. But is all about odds. And today’s situation is a good example. Do I risk COVID or do I risk the vaccine. I took the vaccine. Same with the taco. I think the odds of needing the warranty are much greater than the odds of meeting a semi the wrong way... lol. Just look around in this group. With my 17. They had to pull the engine out 3 times and couldn’t fix it. That’s how I ended up with the 21 that I have now. Hopefully it’ll all be good.

For sure everyone has to weigh the trade offs for themselves.

do you find your 21 drives a lot better than your 17, or are they similar. Reportedly toyota made some updates on the programming side.

The 21 does drive a lot better. I’m very surprised at how different it is. Knowing that is the same engine and trans. Always heard that the sport was a better ride on the road compared to the 4W or the OR. But is not. I’m not sure at how much the different suspension has to do with it. But I’m sure it does. The engine and trans also feel a lot smother. This one actually feels like a new truck. At first it was a sad moment when I was moving my stuff from the 17 to this one. My plan was making it my last vehicle. But now I’m happy they couldn’t fix it. And the automatic chair is very comfortable. The chair could be a little higher at the front so I’m thinking in adding 1/2 or 1 inch spacers. Haven’t read much about them yet. But I think they’re out there.

Look up "Seat jackers." They're a little pricey, in my opinion. I'll probably wind up getting some but if you happen to stumble across something else that looks just as good for less $$ please let me know.

Led headlight and fog lights. Messo TTS1 kit.
I have a 19 Tacoma and was experiencing similar issues until I had the fuel pump recall done. No more stumble and then a huge surge.

Seat Jackers are expensive but worth it. I can drive for 10 hours and not have my legs go to sleep or my back act up.

Alternating between brake and gas pedals it sounds like you initiated the brake-throttle override system. If you inadvertently hit both brake and gas pedals the system will stop and momentarily stall the truck. It also can happen if you swap quickly from brake to gas and the brake pedal hasn’t had time to return to normal position. It’s happened to me twice and I’ve learned to not “two feet” brake and gas and to make a clean change from brake to gas.
The brake-throttle override was implemented due to unintended sudden acceleration causing accidents and deaths a decade ago. I think it’s a terrible fix that could actually cause an accident.
It’s not a “tuning” problem the way you describe it.
