5w40 only in my country

Hi guys, recently I have called my toyota dealer and they use to use only 5w40 for every toyota vehicle diesel or gasoline, and I don't know if for my tacoma it would be fine, what do you guys think?

oh sure it is a gasoline engine the v6 4.0, tacoma don't offer some diesel engine in their new generation

 

It SHOULD be 5W30 but you could probably get away with the 5W40 in your warmer climate.

 

Oh yes in my country the temperature is never less than 18c° but what does the 30 or 40 mean after the 5W?

 

It's a multi-weight oil, so in effect the oil behaves like a 5 weight oil when cold (lower viscosity reduced pumping losses, better cold temp lubrication, and easier starting) and a 40 weight oil when hot (higher viscosity, good for high load, good oil film thickness, good for high temps).

You should be fine given your temps. You may notice a slightly rougher cold idle, but that should be it.

 

I would try and find 5w30, maybe if you do stock up on it? other wise the 5w40 shouldn't hurt. Usually 5w40 is more for diesels, I would be worried about the vvt-i system with the heavier oil.

 

I live in FL and I'm thinking about trying a 5w40 oil. I think it's hot enough here that it'd be beneficial. Plus I always let my truck warm up for a few minutes in the morning when it's below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

Most 5W-40 oils are "dual fleet" (gasoline & diesel) engine oils, primarily produced for commercial use. For about 50,000 miles I've used Mobil-1 TDT 5W-40 in both our 2008 Tacoma 4WD 2TR-FE & in the 2015 F-350 Diesel. Northwest Texas experiences many 100*F+ days each summer and the Winter temperatures below 5*F are rare. I notice no effect on the VVTi and the 105,000+ mile Tacoma never has consumed any oil whatsoever. As soon as my wife's '15 Forester Turbo is out of the powertrain warranty, I'll use the 5W-40 in it as well.

 

5w-40 shouldn't hurt it - but try to find some 5w30 if you can.

That stated those who claim "hot climate, use thicker oil" etc fail to understand, that at operating temp the motor will remain the same temp (within a window of 185-205*f) regardless of ambient temp, due to its cooling system (which also cools the oil)

The only time a motor would require the use of thicker oil is under extreme running conditions (track use etc) where oil temps are higher which would make the higher weight oil the same thickness as the standard oil at standard operating temps.

 

Knowing that 5W30 is the recomended oil for v6 2nd generation, if you can't find the right grade, just go with the oil with nearest upper viscosity curve.

 

You are fine. 5W40 is more difficult to manufacture, so it is often more expensive and harder to find than 5W30 in North America. No real drawbacks compared to 5W30. If you can find 0W30 or 0W40, you can use those too (but not 0W20).

 

I have been running 5w-40 in my truck for a long time now. No issues.
