It's always going to come down to the person in the end, so it's hard to make blanket statements/standpoints on RTT's and be "correct" because everyone seems to have a different idea of what camping is to them and what is acceptable/necessary when doing so. Also consider the guy in the southeast is going to have a different experience with his RTT than the person up in the PNW. That's why you have to take any "advice" with RTT's with a grain of salt.

Your setup is actually pretty smart and resolves a few issues I had with mine and I can immediately see a lot of perks to your setup over a traditional RTT! I dig it, nice thinking!

What it all really comes down to is that it works for the individual. Everyone is too different and there is no such thing as "one" perfect setup, it's all pro/cons which is very personal depending on where you live and what kind of camping you are into. For me they just don't work with with how I like to do things, that's all!

trying to figure out what and where to splice/ cut the winch line to split it in 2 to have a 40ft line on the spool and the rest as an extra to be turned into a extension line, how much rope did you guys spool to make the line?

trying to do some math with this to see what i want before putting it on the truck and cutting the line...

Smittybilt x20 drum diameter is 2.5" as according to the books (It's mounted and i dont feel like reaching into the truck with calipers to get it to measure)
so 2.5" diam circle has a circumference of 8" (7.8 but i rounded up)
according to the book, you want at least 10 wraps for it to actually do anything
so 10*8" = 80", lets round up to 84" (7 feet of synth rope on the spool before even measuring the 40 feet.)

and then on the endy bit where it wraps into it self, i assume you want at least 2-3 feet inside itself (how much is it recommended?)
    • 7 feet wrapped around the drum +
    • 40 feet for the line itself
    • 3 feet for the loop

= 50 feet of actual rope needed to make a functional 40ft winch line

though i'm probably overthinking this, what do you think?
    :annoyed:
