theres literally a million threads on oil, so when I see these pop up it reminds me of a guy wearing a watch ask someone what time it is because he’s too lazy to look it up himself.

Honestly, I didn't even think about that. I was just going down the rabbit hole of reading about oil and jumped on to the forum like, "oh I can help to answer that"

Oil change shouldn't really be something you need to seek out help for, but I do know a few people that have never done it. I'd always try to encourage someone to do their own work.

absolutely. Lots of horror stories about people getting ripped off from jiffy lubes and the like. Stripped drain plugs, over tightened filters, low quality oil put in when customer pays for something of better value.

going to a big box lube shop and getting your oil changed is hit or miss and I’d never take my vehicles there. but then again I wouldn’t expect to get a quality steak from McDonald’s either. To each their own.

Exactly, I just watched a little investigative journalism piece on an oil change shop that was scamming people. It's amazing what they get away with and the amount of upselling of products that you don't need. Many of the employees had never even worked on cars prior to employment. And this kind of thing happens so often in that industry, I'll be doing my own research and work. It's more satisfying anyways :)

absolutely. It’s quite amazing. My dad always taught me at a young age to work on my own vehicles so I never got to have any sour experience thankfully. I see from those types of results and things like you mention that it usually comes down to “if you want it done right do it yourself”.

in this day and age with access to digital manuals, YouTube, Google searching, forum write ups, etc, there’s no reason to not learn how to DIY as much as reasonable. The only thing I normally steer clear of is something that might involve an expensive specialty tool that I wouldn’t use very often in which case it might make more sense to have a quality mechanic do the work.

That's about where I draw the line, there's a few things that are just cheaper to bring in when you need a certain speciality tool. Most of the time I want to just buy whatever tool it is so I have it, but on a fix that happens very rarely it sometimes just doesn't make sense. I'd still want to know the whole process though.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Toyota doesn't make oil. Or filters. They are made by the low bidder for the next batch.

But then nothing labeled TRD on these trucks was developed in their racing program either..........

I pay $30 for a oil change at the dealership around 5K give or take and that’s good enough for me . And I don’t mind waiting

hopefully the coffee is good and the girl at the front desk is easy on the eyes, otherwise I’d be changing it myself!

Sure I can do it myself in my driveway, or go next door to my neighbors who has a lift. The girls are cute and the coffee is ok and it five minutes away so it’s not too bad usually

Costco/Kirkland Full Synthetic 5W30 (about $29 for 2 5 QT jugs, sometimes cheaper) and an OEM Toyota filter from dealer (about $5). I change both every 5000-7000 miles.

Once a year or so my buddy and I do maintenance together. We like to do it in the middle of pool season so our wives prance around in bikinis and get sloshed on margaritas.

It’s truly a win-win for everyone. ~$35 or so for a full synthetic change and bikini clad beer servers.

Y’all really need to rethink your methods.

    Ummmm.....nope.

My wife is no longer bikini clad material. More suitable for a 1930's style swimsuit.

Not sure, only time you'll catch me there is picking up something in the parts department. I avoid that place like the plague.
