I've actually had good luck with the little brush-top cans...of course the end result looks like ass, but it helps!

Food for thought here - Something I think we should be considering is methods of communication and to be relatively uniform. This will help regardless of small group, large group, or terrain.

I still have things to learn about radio communication, but there are some baselines to be aware of. As mentioned by @BEAR_KNIFE_FIGHT prior, there are three main types of communication frequencies when cell/internet aren't available - FRS (CB and Walkie Talkie), GMRS, and HAM. CB seems to be going by the wayside in favor of GMRS/HAM, due to its limited range and clarity.

With the upcoming reduction of an FCC license from $70 to $35 for GMRS (and no test), my suggestion is to go this route or HAM; more power, range, clarity, and less likelihood of channel overlapping with other people. In my opinion, the cool thing about GMRS is that there is only one person in an entire family who needs a license, in order for everyone in that family to make use of it; this includes any and all family members. A good GMRS handheld radio can be had for under $100, either for a pair or just for one.

Worthwhile to consider. Personally, I'll be going down the GMRS/handheld route initially.

Having communication on trails, trips, recovery, and other shenanigans can definitely make the trip more worthwhile. Looking into this myself, literally as I sit here on the throne....

You'll be alright without comms on the TWAT. Or pretty much all of the available "trails" in Wisconsin

TWAT comms are, "can you see the truck ahead of you? can you see the truck behind you? cool, you're good"

Not to take away from any conversation about radio communication, it's certainly one of my hobbies. I just don't want this to be an overlanders-pro-insta-maxtraxs-gotta-get-radios situation.

Agreed. It’s really not necessary unless you are heading out west or road tripping. The drive across Nebraska is slightly more tolerable if you have comms. We just used some handheld frs/gmrs last time, don’t have to get super fancy.

Oddly enough, there was an FJ stuck on one of the runs at Shamrock Shakedown, the guy had four max tracks on his roof and didn't want to use them because he didn't want to get them dirty. And I completely different scenario on a completely different trail run, some clown and a third gen 4runner blew his rear locker and tore up a front CV so he was effectively one-wheel drive, so my two max tracks got used quite liberally to get him out of a bad spot so a tundra could tell him up the side of a gnarly wet clay hill

handhelds work great, that's what we've used on various convoys to and from places as well as while wheeling in the Appalachians and the Ozarks.

I have been thinking I'll go GMRS eventually as well.

What do people use radios for out west that we wouldn't use them for here? I use mine to let people know if I need to stop or if there's oncoming traffic on narrow roads, etc. Do people use them for spotting?

It's the same here, aside from the fact that there's rarely a need for spotting. And, when I have attempted to spot people (which I admittedly suck at) I usually just yell at them and point at stuff. :)

Oh there will be some mods all right
You saying you suck at spotting reminded me of the YouTube videos you see where someone is spotting for someone and the person driving completely ignores the spotter and screws everything up. Always thought that was funny.
