I had spotify for a while, I went back to ripping CDs. Its cheaper in the long run, and not everything I want to listen to is available anyway.

I can see that being an issue if you're into really obscure stuff or have a bunch of live music on CDs.

But damn near every rock. pop, country, rap, classic, etc. studio album you could ever want to listen to is on Spotify.

Having read the OP, and understood his issue, there seem to be some potential solutions:

    https://www.amazon.com/s?k=portable...usb+output,aps,214&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_2_34

    https://www.amazon.com/s?k=portable...r+with+usb,aps,216&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_5_27

Perhaps one of these will be the solution. At least with ASSmazon you can return it if it doesn't work (of course, save all packaging, etc.).

OP: let us know what you end up with, what works, and also what doesn't work. I wish you success!

I'm sure someone would be willing to do a straight trade for a head unit

Thanks for paying attention. I've done the search that you ran. You have to look at the fine print: lots of the Bluetooth says may not work with some car systems so I'm suspicious. And I haven't found any that output via usb; some can get power from them. So I think I will pull the trigger on an aux to Bluetooth adaptor dispite my curmudgeonly dislike of Mr. B.

I'm guessing you won't find a aux to USB adapter that works. USB is a complex beast, and while what you're talking about is entirely possible, the head unit host controller and the software on the head unit would need to support that type of device. Since its something that approximately 0.1% of users would ever do, I doubt Toyota bothered to do it.

Those things are like $10 on Amazon.

    It's certainly worth a try.

I really don't think this would work since it would require drivers that the head unit does not have. Plugging a CD player directly into USB (if you can find one with USB; since this is a bit contradictive) might work if it can act as a mass storage device. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is how USB works on the head unit.

I have Apple Music and my own stuff. I’m actually saving money having Apple Music on the family plan ($2.50 a month per person 6 people on it). Even if it was my own plan at $9.99 a month, I was buying 4-6 cds a month. I have a lot of music you can’t find, but the combination of the 2 makes it nice. It’s great on vacations because my mood in music will change quickly, I’ll go from Thrash fast metal (Over Kill/Testament) to Neil Diamond or Carrie Underwood. I couldn’t carry all my cds with me all the time.

Sounds like it is worth trying, considering the minimal cost.

I just can't believe that this isn't a common problem for many people with newer vehicles; and so there must also be a simple/common solution available. This thread is still young, and perhaps someone will post with their solution eventually.

[I also find it very difficult to fathom the seemingly complete lack of reading comprehension skills exhibited by so many here ]

For $10, I'd still give it a shot before dropping $500 on a new head unit.

I did try a real KISS. Namely I had an auxiliary computer CD drive with USB output. Kind of thing you need for today's drive less laptops. Taco said that it didn't recognize that kind of USB. Sensitive bugger.

Since CD's are their own weird uncompressed format (thus the need for ripping software), having them show up as a mass storage device with a filesystem that the headunit could read (fat32 or exfat maybe) would require a minor miracle.

Fat32 is the only format recognized by Entune.

So you don't think you could use this to play an old Sony Discman directly through the USB port?

I'm obviously and admittedly ignorant in the ways of electronics, compression and USB technology.

Lol are you talking about a CD player that attaches to one of those tape players with a wire? I guess that's going backwards, but same concept?

In this case, the only option would be a Aux to Bluetooth or Aux to FM transmitter.
