I recently moved to Colorado and maybe it's just in my head but the elevation has made my stock gearing feel worse. I'm OVTuned which helps and I run 255/85/r16s. At sea level the 4.3 gears did absolutely fine. I'm wondering if it's worth moving to 4.56 gears (and if I would even notice the difference) vs just going up to 4.88 gears...
Or just get better at wheeling a M/T :anonymous:

    Who makes 4.56 gears?

Mildly confused by your post, do you need gears because of the varying elevations and want to improve drivability or are you off-roading?

I can't say specifically who makes them but I've been reading around and it sounds like they exist. I don't daily it so that's not really a concern, I'm wondering how it will affect off-roading. The bottom end is suffering out here compared to the east coast. I'm heavy too, not to mention I have RCI steel skids to go pick up. Out here is nothing like the baby hills back home. Just trying to give my clutch a break. I think I'll just go 4.88 and take the hit at highway speeds.

Gear ratio’s are based upon A/T gearing. But shows the relative Rpm changes at 60 and 65 with 33’s. Since I tow in 4th I wanted to really look at the impact on 3rd and 4th.

4.56 is a gear ratio that exists for many axles but not that I have seen for the 8.75 diff of the 3rd Gen.

Foreign market Hilux 15 and up has the 8.75" axle with that ratio.

This has been confirmed, however, if you can’t get your hands on them, or they need 8 months to ship from Indonesia, the point is moot. I think they’d sell some 4.56 if offered in North America.

its the elevation i live at sea level and when i get up in high elevation just like any vehicle lose of power due to less oxygen . we were in bryce canyon national park couple years back and about 9,000 ft my truck felt like a gutless pig this was before i tuned my truck . leaving next week for moab so will see how kdmax 6.0 tune will do at higher elevations

Agreed though 4.56 isn’t much change. Might not see a 4.56 option for quite some time.

Most people regear to 4.88 or 5.29. 5.29s seem to have less regret and I would recommend them.

You have my attention o_O but on 33s? What would my rpms look like on the highway at 70mph? Nitro states M/Ts rev higher than A/Ts with the same gearset.

If you drive 80-90 regularly forget 5.29.
