So whatta you think on this ? Run it longer ? Time to change ? This was 15,330 miles / 16 months in the truck

Why put it back in when you have a new one unwrapped?

I put the new one in , just wondering what people consider “dirty” time to change

I went with the 15k mile interval basically and was just curious

A touch early, but it's better for the truck to change them often.

    A little perspective.

    Assume you have a 4L V-6.

Each engine revolution will consume roughly 4 Litres of air. At 2000 rpm, the engine is inhaling 8000 litres of air each minute. At 70mph, about 1 hour at 2000 rpm, the engine will consume 480,000 litres (126,316 gallons) of air. Now, bump that up for the number of miles driven.

That is a whopping load of air laden with pollen, dust, misted road chemicals.............all sorts of airborne swarf.
As a side thought, how often do you blow your nose to clear the debris? You process much less air than your engine.

I change the air filter each year. This is not an expensive part. It helps protect the engine from dirt and a fouled air filter hurts fuel efficiency (mpg).

If you hold it up to the sun or a bright light, can you see light through it at all?

You don't go by time you go by mileage / conditions / and condition of filter. If you drive in shit like this 1 year won't cut it.

    Guys,
DON'T Replace your air filter if it is not dirty. Filters actually work better when they are a little dirty because the dirt clogs up some of the larger holes in the filter actually improving the filtering capability. If a filter looks clean LEAVE IT ALONE. You are actually hurting your engine to replace it. Replacing it every year or every "X" miles "whether it needs it or not" or "because it is cheap insurance" is WORSE for your engine than replacing it when you should --when it is dirty. Air filters are designed to work slightly clogged--only when they are filthy or really blocked do they affect MPG.
A good explanation for this is found here, and also explains why manufacturers are recommending longer intervals between changes than they used to (fuel injection engines are not as affected by the filter as the older carbureted engines)

I apply this logic to my saws at work. The engine turns chain just as efficiently up the point where she starts to lean out. I don’t apply this kind of logic to my vehicles.

Try carrying one 100+ days a year. You’d find *logic* there as well.

I check my engine and cabin air filters every couple weeks. I'll blow them out with a little air from my compressor. If i can see light coming through the filter, I'll put in back into the truck. If not, I install a new one.

I usually change mine every other year. They don’t usually look much worse than yours.
I typically pull them and inspect them before I actually order a new one.
If that would have been my filter, I’d make a not to order one the next time I order a cabin filter.
