    There have been a lot of stolen tailgates on craigs internet fence lists.
    The police are very busy and
    I am sure they investigate as much as they can but can not get to all fishy sounding sellers.

    Ask the seller to meet at a nearby police station to make the sale.
    This most likely will get him thinking about how fake his ad is and turn away from his life of crime to become a productive member of the community!! ;)
