There is a corollary to this thinking.

A partially plugged air filter will be more restrictive to air flow. This increases the vacuum the engine must pull to get sufficient air for efficient combustion. Sure the engine/fuel management system can compensate better than the carburetor fed engines.

Thanks just the same. I'll stick with the recommended change interval. I'm pretty sure the folks who designed and developed the engine have a good grasp on when the air filter needs to be changed. Also, the part is not very expensive, plus easy to replace.

I guess you didn't read what I originally posted. Only replace your filter if it is dirty--changing it before it is dirty actually causes more problems for your engine because it allows dirt to get by the (clean) filter. But to each his own. Your MPG and HP won't be affected at all by this practice. If you let it get so clogged as to affect either, then they are really dirty.

I change the engine and cabin air filter once a year. To qualify that I don't off road, strictly highway driving. Don't forget to upgrade the air pump filter.

Ditto. Any filter (air, oil, whatever) is technically the most efficient at filtering particles just before it becomes totally blocked. Most people aren't running filters in conditions for them to become totally blocked, either, so put 2 and 2 together.

Guess I’m doing it wrong, 305k miles and air filters changed yearly regardless of appearance.

    who knew....

I wish we had a way to tag someone so all of their posts I read going forward had some obvious banner or color or something. Then I would know not to trust a thing they say.

On my car I change them at every 4,000mi oil change. They are dirty at that point. Not sure if it's the engine intake or because it's got a turbo?

On the truck I change them when they look like yours did.

The engine can handle tiny particles of dust, it does not need a HEPA filter to run better. It needs to breathe to run better...
