I have a 2002 SR5 4WD 2.7L, I am needing to replace the starter, I want a good one for as inexpensive as possible, what should I get? Is OEM recommended? I have access to NAPA, O'Reilly's and Autozone locally.

OEM. My toyotas seem to reject parts store grade parts. Depending on how many miles you have and if it's original, OEM would be the cheapest long term despite being the most expensive upfront. You could also try rebuilding it yourself, k never did it but heard it's easy.

Okay and does it matter what fuel filter I get? Hard to find OEM locally.

I just replaced my third starter a month ago on my 1996 4x4 2.7 with 414,000 miles on it. My first replacement was a 'lifetime' warranty starter from Advance Auto so my last replacement was no charge for the starter.

Get new brushes and plungers from NAPA to replace ones in your starter.
Good as new and cheaper too.

As someone else said rebuild your OEM starter. You can get the brushes and such from Toyota for a few bucks, cheaper than you can buy an aftermarket unit and it's pretty easy.

As for filter OEM if you can I mean the original lasted you how long? I don't remember them being that expensive either.

If not Napa Gold should be plenty fine I believe that's what URD uses in their upgrade kits recommend for forced induction.

I'm unable to do the replacement myself, the mechanic is wanting to use autozone parts, I don't want to rebuild it now I am too unsure of how to do it. It doesn't look like a new oem is readily available, only rebuilt ones, any suggestions on where to get one? The other thing I am thinking is using NAPA stuff, their stuff has always done us well. Any opinions on autozone?

I just found that NAPA has remanufactured Denso starters, would they be better than a new autozone one?

What parts your mechanic wants to use does not matter.

It is your truck and your money. If you want an OEM starter, then the mechanic needs to install an OEM starter.

YOU have the final say about what goes on your ride.

Reman Denso. For my Lexus was $120. Cheap and effective.

Not to be a dick, but it’s just a starter. You’ll be fine with almost any reman.

Yes I'm going to go with OEM, it seems to be the most highly recommended.
Since I need to hire someone to install it I want one that will last another 125k at least.

O-reilleys fuel filter and starter (whatever brand they had) with 155K on those parts. No problems yet.

Sounds like they're all good, I found a Denso at Napa, and a Napa gold filter. Thanks everyone!

How long your second starter last and was it a Bosch one?
