Got my loader, filter head, and starter off. Trying to find a solenoid. That one bolt behind starter was a bear.

 

Way to thick, follow the manufacturers recommendation other then straight weight, 10-whatever [I suspect it'll be 30 weight] is what you want. You want oil to flow, you don't want STP in your crankcase. And yes, go full synthetic, a lot of cooling happens with oil on air cooled engines. The oil can get pretty toasty and heat is where full synthetic really shines over conventional or semi-synthetic oil.

 

This is what the dealer gave me for the first change. Which is what’s currently in the motor.

 

Most of our air cooled engines have flat tappet cams which need zinc to assist in lubrication. It has been removed from automotive oils as zinc plugs up cat converters and newer car's roller lifters don't need it. I run diesel oil which still has zinc in it.

I run Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic in my Kohlers. If I lived in a hotter climate I'd run Mystic 15W-50 which has zinc and is cheap at farm and fleet stores. I get it at Atwood's here in NW AR for $12.60/gal. Just about to put it in my Cub hydro.

I went and looked up the ''recommended'' oil for Kawasaki engines and it was 10w40, synthetic is fine. I was surprised they did list 20w-50 for use, I really don't see that much anymore unless it's simply due to it being air cooled and higher engine temps.

 

Somebody say tractor and mowers? I don't have the land for needing a tractor, but got a couple mowers. Got my Cub out the other day for the Spring oil change. Decided to use my oil extractor as getting the oil out the normal way is an absolute PITA on this Kohler 22HP twin. I'll say I'll never go back to the old way!



Also thought I had an oil filter to put on it, but somehow it disappeared in my mess of a garage. Could not find a Kohler filter locally so I had to improvise. Remembered in my database of useless knowledge that the same filter from a 4.0L Tacoma or 4Runner will fit. It barely clears, but fits! Also $6 compared to the almost $12 they want for the OEM filter...



Same weekend I decided to replace my push mower with something a little nicer. My old Weedeater brand 3.5HP push is well worn and the rear wheels were so worn they were looking like a stanced Honda. Decided to go with a Honda. It's the "entry level", but is far better than any push mower I've owned.

Wasn't sure if I was gonna be able to haul such a load with the mower and a big bag of weed and feed



Haven't been able to use it yet. We had a pretty good cold snap and I didn't want to mow before that in fears I'd hurt the lawn.




So there's my boring post. Just mowers for me right now. Co-worker has an old rotten mower we're planning on pulling the engine to use in my friends Terrimite backhoe, so that'll be an interesting project.

 

Ended up using mobile 1 10w40 full synthetic for my gravely. Kawasaki filter

 

Picked these up from a fellow member who is a great guy.... carb cleaned, fresh gas and an oil change and both seem to run great.... time will tell seeing the mowing season is around the corner

 

Got my filter head cleaned and rebuilt.

Got the starter back on and filter head. Changed the oil and filter. Now to wash it and attach the loader back.

I do good to see 55 with it to the floor. Not sure what it’s even rated to pull honestly

 

It’s the thing around here. Leveled up on 22’s. Here is my wife’s tahoe.

 

I always like more rubber than wheel but it’s all good in my book
