i felt the 4.0L power was adequate but i think the manual transmission helped. the payload is a bigger problem in my mind (and i had done significant suspension upgrades). my eagle was about as trim as you are going to get for a FWC on a Taco (the fleets are now wider i think) but the wind drag was obvious. my mpgs went from around 18 without the camper to around 14.5 with it.

I think you're on the right track when you're thinking of getting a different truck. To me, all that weight would just make the tacoma unpleasant to drive both on the open road and on the trails. And gas mileage would be abysmal. With a bigger truck you'd have more room, more comfort, probably better MPG, and you wouldn't be stressing half the components in the truck half to death. And you could get the build done with a lot less $$$ and effort.

You're not wrong at all. But, having made minimal enhancements to my suspension and carrying a base model Kimbo in the back, the truck handles it just fine. I had already had the standard 885 with Billys and Dakars installed a couple of years before. Only added airbags and E-rated tires. My tire weight actually became lighter going from a 265 Wildpeak SL to a 245 Toyo AT3 E. Being able to take this camper off by-myself in about 15min. and have my truck and not a full size is a nice thing. After having it off-road where line choice is crucial and plenty of highways and mountain passes, I am very pleased with how it handles. Yeah you take corners at recommended speeds, but I would hope you're doing that with a trailer or anything else that's close to the GVW. Gas milage is about the same or better than some rigs here, unless the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.l'll probably hit and hold 3k rpm and cruise up most mountain passes here at around 50mph, that's with a 900lbs camper alone, plus the gear, pups etc. I'll pay the price at the pump for more extended stays while camping, more restful sleeping, sever weather protection, and full winter camping. I totally understand if you don't want to push what's on the sticker, but many have and are doing it as safe as possible if you ever consider the FWC again. My driving is much safer with that thing on the back compare to how I usually drive.

I'm about 13.5-14 with the Kimbo. Less than a half tank from Steamboat to Denver. Thats two mountain passes and 155 miles.

We are hoping to take delivery in December of one of these guys! We'll see if they are on time. It's the Scout Yoho. Had an AT Habitat for a couple years but sold it and put down deposit to get in line with Scout. Looking forward to some insulation, heat, and hard sides. Similar weight to FWC. Currently my truck has U402 Deaver Expedition Stage 3 leave pack for 700-1000lbs constant bed weight. My rear is sitting a bit high right now running empty. Once I get the camper, I'll be removing my tailgate and swingout. Personally, did not want the soft sides of the FWC.

I like the idea but they look ridiculous on Tacomas. Too narrow across the bottom and too tall before widening out over the bedsides. I just can't get past that.

Thank you again everyone for the insight. I am 50/50 About listing my truck for sale to upgrade to something bigger! I LOVE my tacoma and really don't want a "huge" truck but also want to be comfortable and not stressing my truck out to bad while driving around.

Anybody remember these, rented once, other than no power it had all the room we needed. Slept 4. And we only went 500 miles.

I was blown away how roomy it was when I got inside (disclaimer: bed is only suitable for short people like me, 72" mattress). Pictures online don't do it justice. As for looking ridiculous... looks better than the Kimbo, lol (no offense @Voltron4x4 , just my opinion). Not to mention, looks aren't everything. As for the weight, I was already running heavy with my previous build. Taking off the Habitat and all its contents that I was carrying 100% of the time will be a decent trade-off for the small percentage of time I'm hauling this slightly heavier setup... And honestly, it might be lighter, lol.

Now I'm not suggesting everyone go and blast past their GVWR. I've thought about it, and decided that going a little over on occasion is within my risk tolerance. Especially with a friend driving high miles on his over 7K pound Tacoma, hahaha. As for me, can't wait to take delivery!!

What you don't want to sleep in a space pod? Working on a booster rocket mod to counter the overage on the GVW. Take Delivery Day is a great day! Stoked for you.

I will say your interior is my favorite for a Kimbo. Most builds are way too busy and PACKED. Also great to see you still do a little offroad. Gonna be a bit harder here in the PNW due to tree limbs and tight stuff, but that was rare for me to hit before anyhow. I do more the park and camp thing vs "overlanding". Base camp for the ATV/UTV it'll be the best out on the Oregon Dunes!

Appreciate that! Space is very valuable in these things, even more so in a habitat I'm sure. That one trip to the grand canyon rim was a bit more than I wanted but worth it. Working on strengthening the bed tie downs after. I'm mostly a base camper too. I have my bike for the fun stuff like your ATV/UTV, you get to come down much faster.

Those look like nice campers. Somebody might want to start a YOHO thread !

    Get the bigger truck.

You'll be fine with the Tacoma, but everything is kind of at its limit in a sense. The weight is being pushed, the brakes work harder to stop, the rear sags incredibly, the MPG goes down, the truck drives like crap in side/head wind, 65-70mph becomes your only speed (45-50 uphill lol).

I'm close at 900lbs extra in the rear and I feel every bit of it. Mind you the Vagabond is better feeling on and off road than the 4WC.

just curious why you say "the vagabond is better feeling on and off road than the 4WC." my FWC setup was similar weight as yours at around 850lbs and was mounted to the bed of the truck vs the bed rails which wouldn't encourage bed side flex.

what was your experience like off road with a FWC?

I want to start one, but I'm figuring I'd let whoever on here got one first do that if they wanted. Mine is supposed to arrive in December. Haven't really heard much chat on here about it, that's for sure. Maybe I'll just go ahead and start one anyhow. Whatta ya think?

I think yes, most of us with Kimbos were on Voltron's Kimbo thread talkin campers, trucks, suspension etc. way before we picked up the campers. They had (possibly still have) the same thing going on there with the 6 to 9 month lead time from deposit placement to camper receipt that it sounds like YOHO does.

I just checked out their website, but it wasn't super clear so I requested a brochure. Says 1020lbs fully loaded with all options (I'm still assuming that is dry, though), but that's under it saying 1020lbs for the base model with pretty much no options...
