The torque spec is on the cap and box, think it's only around 18 foot pounds whereas the kids at the Dealer crank it down to about 118, lol.

Has anyone gone in for their 10k/1yr and denied getting just the oil change or were they insistent on getting it all done?

@shakerhood The good thing is I have a torque wrench now. I've never used one but a few times working on things on others garages. I will try to get it right.

@along16 I know what you mean. I learned to take care of a car when 3000 miles was recommended widely. Then I went to the Liberty CRD with synthetic oil and recommend that changed every 6000 miles for severe service and 12,000 otherwise. Some of my uses are in the severe service recommendation. On that Jeep I used Blackstone labs tests. They told me I could go to 8000 in it. But I never did I stayed with 6000 mile OCi. I was never ok in my head with running 12,000 miles on oil.
Going to test the trucks a few times and see what they say. I am ok with 5000 OCi but not sure if my use of the truck would be ok with 10,000.
I know everyone has an opinion on if more oil changes are worth it. Oil is still cheaper than metal last I checked.

I change mine twice a year, ends up being between 5 - 7K miles.
I'm OK with "wasting" a few bucks on a $30 oil and filter change.

I'm not anti torque wrench, but I don't use one to tighten the reinforced nylon filter housing. It's actually a fine piece of engineering, by design the housing bottoms out against the step below the O ring. When the step makes contact and offers the slightest resistance...I stop cranking on the wrench. It's almost like someone engineered it as a tactile indicator. :)

I completed oil change number 10 about a week ago, still using the OEM housing. The claims that the OEM housing is a complete piece of junk are misplaced, if there has to be blame assigned...it's operator error. If you let the dealer/quickie lube monkeys change your oil, yeah the aluminum housing could be a good move. But they will over tighten it too. I'd rather they ruin a plastic housing instead of fucking up the threads on the block. YMMV

@desmodue I agree twice a year should be good for me too. It worked out to be that way with the last vehicle I took care of myself mostly. I'm only got to go to the dealership for the included service because I paid for them with the truck and it gets a service history stated. After that I'm going to keep my own record on the Toyota app and in my own book.

Only thing i can tell you is when my first oil change was scheduled i only had 4k miles or so. Just getting them to change the oil was a pita. They refused to replace the filter till 10k miles...was told they weren't even obligated to replace the oil at that mileage. They rotated the tires, performed some multi-point inspection, and sent me on my way scheduled to come back in march for a complete oil and filter change. Said that would be 1 year, or 10k miles.

I found it fine to replace synthetic oil and filter once a year when i had the 2001 tundra 4.7. The truck could have an average of 15k miles or a bit more every oil change. I used mobile 1 synthetic the entire time owned. Sold the truck last feburary with nearly 300k miles. It still ran like new.

Yeah... I just did my first "service" and all they did was tire rotation and mp inspection. At a mere 3100 mi, I wasn't expecting them to offer up an oil change which I know they won't do till 10k/12mo. I'm fine with them rotating the tires and making sure my floor mats won't cause me to crush a Prius but I'd rather do the oil service myself.

When I was reading the first posts of this thread about "you think you know more than Toyota engineers!", this is exactly what came to mind.
The official maintenance schedule isn't determined solely by 'Toyota engineers', it is also strongly influenced by 'Toyota accountants' and is designed to provide the most financially advantageous service schedule for Toyota: providing just enough maintenance to keep the vehicle free of problems until it is out of warranty, but not any more than that.

The reluctance of dealers to replace the filter at the 1yr/10k interval if under 10k miles is clear evidence of this; the recommended maintenance schedule is a financial decision, not a vehicle longevity one.

I thought that the Toyota Care 2 year maintenance was every 5K oil changes?

That is from the old days. Technology and chemistry have changed drastically theses days.
Do you know that there are lawnmowers that advertise you NEVER have to change the oil for the lifetime of the mower. Now I would have a hard time with that, couldn't believe it when I first heard it, but I just thought I'd throw it out for discussion.

I did see that when looking for a lawn mower. I always changed my cars oil at 5K- picking up my Tacoma tomorrow, so I was doing some reading on first oil change.

    I commute 80m daily on my 2021 2.7.
Bought mine in Feb at 6 miles and it has 5,800 as of today. Went in for the 1stbsvc/tire rotation last week.

Thinking of changing the oil now and then getting it changed again at 10k by the dealer.

    Old thread, new truck.
    Just bought a 2022 TRD 4WD Sport.

On the windshield a dealer sticker says,.. First oil change at 5000 miles.
    0-20W is the stock weight.

Then after 10,000 miles the second is due and then there after every 10,000 miles.

Dealer sticker is incorrect. First oil change is at 10k.
