Potential stupid question about oil leak

Still fairly new here. Have a 2019 SR double cab but haven't done anything to it yet. Been on covid work from home detail for the last year so its only got 11,000 miles on it too.

I did a search first and did not find what I was looking for.

Got the oil changed a week ago and have a few small drops of oil in the driveway after driving since.

Took the air dam off(truck looks better without it) and dropped the skid plate. Nice puddle inside the skid plate, a little on the filter housing, and a little on the oil drain plug. Cleaned everything and still getting a few drops of oil after driving the truck.

The potentially stupid question is this: Can I remove the oil filter housing (draining that first) without draining all of the engine oil from the pan/sump? Not good with all the terminology.

I just want to check that the o-rings are in place and that the filter housing wasn't overtightened but dont want to have to drain all the new oil.

One good thing to come from this is that I realized I can get under the truck without jacking it up, and will be changing the oil myself from now on.

    Thanks for any info.

Novice tech spilled it all over the skid. $100 an hour labor at that.

You can put a large piece of newspaper between the skid and filter at night, pull it out in the morning and see if it's dripped. That way you don't have to wait til it runs from the skid which would be a while.

When you buy a new filter it usually comes with a little plastic thing that screws into the metal filter cover and allows the oil to drain out the bottom of the cover before removing the cover itself. As long as you do this, it shouldn’t be too messy when removing the cover to check those o rings. But you’ll obviously need to replace the oil that has drained out so it’s at the proper level again.

To clarify the post above, yes you can pull the filter and replace o-rings without draining the oil in the pan. You are just losing oil from the filter housing itself.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I thought I would be able to pull the filter and only lose the oil that was in the filter housing. I have seen those plastic pieces mentioned, and was also looking at the MotivX filter wrench and drain hose. That drain hose looks like it just does the job a little cleaner than the plastic that comes with replacement filters.

If you drop the filter you'll only lose the oil in the filter housing , maybe 1/2 qt..

I'd just clean it up and monitor it

I wonder how many techs at the dealer use that ?
I had a white Tundra oil changed at the dealer once.
About a quart of oil on the skid blew all over the undercarriage.
Messy handprints all over the hood etc.
    Total bs.

Not sure, my guess is they have something better. Maybe with a hose to a container?

Had the same thing happen twice with my free toyota oil changes.

    Clean it and monitor

I'd be surprised if it was anything more than spilled oil heating up and dripping down.

FWIW - Recently picked up the MotivX kit(wrench, adapter w/drain hose, and funnel) and changed the oil on my 2021 SR @1700 miles. Well worth the $60 for the kit.

Like others have said Tech splattered oil all over the place. IMO take it back to where you had service, be respectful and ask for the manager and explain what's going on. If they correct their error and clean up the mess then I would return to them, if not find a new servicer for your truck.

Just picked up a 2021 3.5L. Amazon and Motivx both say it’s not for the 2021, I’m assuming both sites are not updated that’s all. Does yours fit? What was your Motivx part number?

This is the one I got and it said the same thing(that it wouldn't fit). Worked like a champ. This is a quality product.

    Kit contains :
    Motivx Tools MX2320
    MX2341 oil filter drain tool
MX2301 threaded oil funnel for Toyota and Lexus vehicles
